Let’s Talk About That Mid Credit Scene In ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’…(Contains Spoilers!)

The sequel to the fantastic ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ was released on the 1st April. Just like its predecessor, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ was a fantastic and enjoyable film. And, while my spoiler-free review is now up, this article will focus on a spoiler moment within the sequel. So, please note that this article will contain spoilers for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

The scene this article will focus on is the mid credit scene that appeared at the end. While the army are cleaning up the parts of Dr Robotnik’s mech robot at the end of the film, one officer discovers documents that belong to the mad scientist that dates back 50 years. The documents revolve around a secret project that Robotnik was working on. The title? Project Shadow.

That’s right: Shadow the Hedgehog will be the next villain in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’.

Shadow the Hedgehog made his first appearance in 2001’s ‘Sonic Adventures 2’ and proved to be popular amongst fans. This popularity then gave him a role in 2003’s ‘Sonic Heroes’ and his own solo game in 2005, which was met with mixed reviews.

Personally, Shadow is one of my favourite characters in the franchise. While his portrayal has been mixed in the games, he carried a different persona compared to the more kid-friendly Sonic and Tails, and his design is cool too. And, while I found his solo game problematic, I couldn’t help but enjoy it. So, the introduction of a live action Shadow is really exciting.

And, just like the lead trio, Paramount have taken care to not disrupt Shadow’s design when translating it to the big screen. He looks fantastic as the camera pans to his prison chamber, slowly revealing the character. After watching and loving the two films, I have faith that Paramount and director Jeff Fowler will know the best way to portray this character onscreen.

However, the reveal didn’t give fans a glimpse of his voice and, so, my brain started wondering who would be best to voice the edgy hedgehog and have come up with three actors. These aren’t confirmed actors, just fan suggestions.

For Shadow, a slightly rougher voice would work very well (similar to Idris Elba’s voice for Knuckles), so the first two suggestions are Dwayne Johnson and John Cena. Both actors have very quickly gained a lot of love and their performances are always enjoyable. While Johnson has more experience with acting in family-orientated films, John Cena could give the hedgehog an edge that would be needed, especially after his role of Peacemaker in the solo series and ‘The Suicide Squad’. However, both actors can also perform as comedic characters. Again, Johnson has performed in a lot of family/kid friendly films, but John Cena made an appearance in ‘Fast & Furious 9’ as an over-the-top villain; maybe this type of performance could work with Shadow too?

But another actor who could give Shadow a great voice could be Jamie Foxx. This actor has just done ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’, reprising the role of Electrode, originally from ‘Amazing Spiderman 2’. While the latter film had its issues, I always thought Foxx’s iteration of Electrode had potential; it was just a shame that the overall execution was poor. But, given his fantastic, and slightly menacing, performance in ‘No Way Home’, his voice could work beautifully with Shadow and make him a scary villain compared to the zany behaviour of Jim Carrey’s Dr Robotnik.

Given how great the Sonic the Hedgehog films have been, I am excited about the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog for the confirmed third film. I have faith that the film will give this character a fantastic portrayal given their track record so far and, while I have laid out a few suggestions, I am very interested to hear who would voice the character.

Megan’s taste in films are interesting: her favourite films are ‘Space Jam’, Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Cat Returns’, as well as horror films ‘Saw’, ‘Drag Me To Hell’ and ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’. When she’s not watching films, she’ll be spending precious hours playing ‘Crash Bandicoot’.
