Is Creature From The Black Lagoon Still In Line For A Reboot?

Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of the classic Universal-International offerings which was set to be remade in Universal Pictures’ planned Dark Universe.

However, the franchise has experienced a number of setbacks recently and has reached a stage where the studio is drastically rethinking its strategy.

The reboot of this 1954 classic from Jack Arnold is off the cards in the shared universe for now, but could still be worthy of a standalone film in the near future.

After the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Universal thought that it could create a similar cash cow with its Universal Monsters. The franchise began with Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy in 2017 and, due to highly negative reviews and a poor box office run, it appears that this is also where the franchise ended. Indiewire.com described it as the worst Tom Cruise movie ever. Prior to the film’s release, Universal had plans for a number of other classic monster revivals including Creature From the Black Lagoon. But it was soon announced that these would be put on hold while the studio rethought its plan of action.

Instead of sticking with the original idea of a shared universe in which these well-known monsters would cross over between films, it seems that Universal may now be planning on releasing some of the titles as standalone offerings. The Invisible Man, for instance, was released in February 2020, and director Leigh Whannel stated that it wasn’t part of a wider universe. This could pave the way for the Creature from the Black Lagoon to be made in a similar way.

There is already huge franchise potential in place for a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon. The creature, otherwise known as Gill-Man, has appeared in various other films. One of the most memorable showings was in the classic 1987 movie, The Monster Squad. At the top recommended online casino from CasinoWings.com, Casino Casino, there is a popular slot game based on the classic horror. A lot of modern films have slot games made for them after their release as a way to attract more viewers. With this slot already well-known, there could be a readymade audience for any silver screen offering. This will be helped by the notoriety of the classic 1954 picture as well, obviously, and the fact that it also inspired recent works such as Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water in 2017 according to Screenrant.com.

When it comes to legendary horror films like Creature from the Black Lagoon, viewers most likely want to see a modern retelling of the story with state of the art special effects. When it comes to characters like this, it wouldn’t make much sense to have them moving about between different films. Could you imagine if the Frankenstein Monster just turned up by the lagoon? The writers would have to come up with something truly amazing to make that viable.

With the MCU being a comic book franchise, it is easy for the creators to explain how these characters cross into each other’s worlds. But with the monsters, it is a different story. It might be better for these reboots to remain as standalone films. If this happens, then viewers should be able to expect a Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot at some stage.
