As we celebrate 10 years, was 2014 a good one?

12 Years a Slave

Steve McQueen’s visceral and devastating historical drama tells the story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the American south. Featuring heart-breaking performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o, as well as a fearlessly villainous turn from Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave is a stirring insight into one of the darkest chapters of human history.

20,000 Days on Earth

This art-house documentary takes a lyrical look at the life of the godfather of goth rock – Nick Cave. Marking the Australian musician and writer’s 20,000th day on the planet, the film presents a fictionalised account of 24 hours in Cave’s life, featuring interviews, live performance, and behind-the-scenes insight into the studio sessions for his 2013 album Push the Sky Away. Cave is an innate storyteller, and his hypnotically engaging narration couples with the Bad Seeds’ compelling music and directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s woozy visuals to create an inventive and intimate cinematic and musical poem.
