Set more or less entirely in a trailer home, Breathless sees friends Lorna and Tiny dealing with stolen monies and a dead husband, all the while a lone police officer prowls outside to gain entry to the property.
Both Gina Gershon and Keli Giddish give a great deal in their roles but one can’t help but wonder if this screenplay had originally been adapted for the stage. Each twist, turn and revelation adds a richness to the plot that is only undermined by some clunky dialogue and an overall lack of visual finesse. Elsehwere we have some phoned in performaces from Val Kilmer and Ray Liotta with only Wayne Duvall providing anything that resembles a worthy foil to Gershon and Giddish.
Part dark comedy, part crime thriller Breathless fails to deliver enough of either aspect to prove memorable. Its lack of budget is hindered by an absence of visionary flare and for a ninety-minute feature there are some languid moments that seem to go on for an age. The costumes, gore and set add a certain verisimilitude but overall the script and performances would have worked better in a theatrical production rather than on screen.
