For anyone who has spent their childhood summers in the UK or has had the pleasure of a ‘staycation’, films and cinema are sure to have played a big part.

This year we’ve had a good amount of sunny and hot weather, but this hasn’t dented box office takings for some of the biggest hit films of 2014.

So as the nights draw in and extra layers start to be worn, here is the rundown of the most successful movies in the UK so far this year as summer comes to a close.

1 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (3D) (12A)

The second in the re-boot of the franchise sees Andy Serkis star once again. It is the sequel to the 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes which kicked off 20th Century Fox’s revival of the original Planet of the Apes series and this one is set 10 Years later.

Having grossed over $611 million worldwide, as of 24th August 2104 it has received £30,987,705 at UK box offices, making it the biggest film of the year so far.

2 The Inbetweeners 2 (15)

Their second big screen outing after starting life as an E4 sitcom, this time the four school friends meet up again for a holiday in Australia.

Written and directed by series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, The Inbetweeners 2 has been a hit at Cineworld theatres around the UK and with a gross of £27,631,404, it is the second most popular film of the year so far.

3 How to Train Your Dragon 2 (3D) (PG)

A box office total of £22,289,336 puts this sc-fi fantasy film firmly in the top three UK cinema hits of the year up to this point.

Set in the mythical world that pair Vikings and dragons created in the popular book written by Cressida Cowell, the action is mixed with laughs and knows exactly how to please audiences of all ages.

4 Guardians of the Galaxy (3D) (12A)

Superheroes are probably the biggest thing in cinema right now and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the tenth instalment in their Cinematic Universe.

Featuring an uneasy and unlikely alliance between a group of extraterrestrial misfits who are on the run, the film was an instant critical and financial success worldwide and has taken £21,895,128 in the UK so far.

5 Maleficent (3D) (PG)

Starring Angelina Jolie as the Disney villainess character, the film is a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty but from the viewpoint of the baddie Maleficent.

It was sure to be a hit with all the family and proved that by taking £18,967,887 in the UK by the end of summer.
