BRWC Interview: Marcel Walz

Marcel Walz is writer, director and producer of BLOOD VALLEY: SEED’S REVENGE.  we had a quick chat with him.

How did we get to BLOOD VALLEY: SEED’S REVENGE?

The first idea about making BLOOD VALLEY: SEED’S REVENGE came to my mind in 2012 during vacation in the USA, more precisely during vacation in the Las Vegas area. That was where the idea was born and finally where the movie was filmed, so you might call it destiny.

After having the first ideas, and talking with Uwe Boll, it took us only 3 months to complete the screenplay. In Jan 2013 (4 moths before shooting) all contracts were signed.

Was it a tough project to put together?

Of course it was not easy to handle this project. For me, it was the first movie shooting in the USA, without my DOP Wolfgang Meyer who handled permits, insurances, etc., making this movie would not have been possible. He did a great job –  especially his wonderful work as a DOP.

What was your first day on set like?

It was just like, wow, we have made it. All on set, everything arranged, let’s start shooting. No… really it was amazing after all the work in the past, all the preparation and problems we had to solve, all of us were happy to start shooting and make this movie.

What do you want people to take from the film?

Oh, as a horror movie, what should you take from a film like that… enjoy it, that is was movies are made for. Maybe after you have seen the movie you will find out that everything in the world has two different point of views, even the small things, yes YOU will have to find out.

How much or little did you come into contact with Uwe Boll?

Uwe and I know each other for a couple of years, so we were and are in contact regularly.

Nevertheless, during pre production we of course had to discuss many things, about how to develop the screenplay, what actors we wanted to work with.

Any films you come back to/take inspiration from?

The movie that really changed my life, my intention in making movies was Scream, but Seed 2 was inspired by the Devils Reject.

Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a director?

Oh I can remember, when I was a child, around 10 years, I wrote my first screenplay.  It was only 2 pages long but we all started off in a small way.

What are your thoughts on the future for filmmakers in your shoes?

Filmmaking is always a challenge, even more today, as the film market is more and more dominated by major label and major films. Filmmakers should believe in themselves and go their way.

So what are you working on at the moment?

There are two projects I am working on presently, both in pre production, so the screenplay is in development and financing is taking place. That’s why I am presently not allowed to talk about it, but be sure it is going to be something bloody.

Are Indie films in a good place right now?

Making Indie films is always a challenge, major film budgets raise more and more and you do not know what they used their money for.

Indie films are different and everybody tries to make everything to make the movie have success, and it shows that you can make good movies with less money and without a major label.
