By Danny L.

As time passes, more cinematic classics fade into history, rarely to be seen again by younger audiences. Fortunately, stellar remakes allow older and younger audiences alike to enjoy timeless stories updated with modern twists.

Here are ten of the greatest movie remakes of all time:

10. King Kong (2005)

Only writer and director Peter Jackson could manage to take a seventy-year-old story about a colossal, sympathetic gorilla and prove yet again why the story is a classic. With stunning visuals, bold directorial vision, and surprising pathos from a primate, “Kong” steals the hearts of character Ann Darrow and movie-goers alike. Jack Black plays a slimy, manipulative director who will stop at nothing to see his film made. Which is a character change from his previous funny, well liked characters. This is a must see film that is great for watching with friends or family.

9. Halloween (2007)

Featuring the talents of horror genre director Rob Zombie, the 2007 remake of “Halloween” expands upon the story of serial killer Michael Myers to explain his murderous motivation. Zombie updates the nightmarish story to make it as fascinating as it is horrifying. If you haven’t seen Halloween then watch this remake, it will send chills down your spine and leave you on the edge of your seat. Watch this brilliant horror remake at night for maximum scare.

8. True Lies (1994)

The most expensive film ever made at the time of its release (yes, it was a James Cameron film), this remake of French spy comedy “La Totale!” (1991) combines’ breakneck action, political thrills, and disarming doses of humor to surpass the original. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, this is an action thriller that has a surprise twist.

7. The Italian Job (2003)

The Italian Job remake introduces a 21st century spin.  Boasting a powerhouse cast of Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Ed Norton, and a younger Jason Statham, this movie is action packed and full of charisma. Fortunately, insanely clever action sequences and a tight script match the talent of the film’s cast and make for a quintessentially engaging heist movie for all to enjoy.

6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

This now horror classic adeptly takes the best facets from the original film and stitches them together with equally disturbing brand-new elements. This reboot especially succeeds in crafting evocative characters; the unwitting victims are as sympathetic as Leatherface and his monstrous family are sickening. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn’t for the faint hearted but will provide you with plenty of fright and excitement.

 5. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Every aspect of Ocean’s eleven, from the writing to the aesthetics, oozes with style and panache. With an all-star ensemble cast of A listers including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, Ocean’s Eleven pays stunning tribute to its 1960 counterpart by maintaining the bounce and wit of the original. Combined with an engaging plot and explosive action sequences, this movie fails to disappoint.

4. The Fly (1986)

Few modern horror movies take the time to dwell in the tragedy of its circumstance. The Fly basks in it. By rooting itself in the magnificent character acting of Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, the 1986 version of The Fly ensures that its slow-burn horror crawls under the skin of viewers and ensnares them with wonderful, yet tragic emotional investment.

3. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Broadway-inspired classic Little Shop of Horrors mixes together seemingly impossible ingredients, off-beat comedy, gruesome murder, alien life, and catchy musical numbers, to create the campiest film on this list. Actors Rick Moranis and Steve Martin amp up the absurdity with priceless performances.

 2. The Departed (2006)

Director Martin Scorsese makes a movie masterpiece of mixed-up morality with The Departed, a 2006 rendition the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs. With gripping performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, this film depicts the murky underworld of the Boston Irish Mob and the Boston police force in a way that’s certain to leave viewers reeling.

1. Cape Fear (1991)

Proving that he’s the master of remake films, Scorsese completes the list with 1991 version of Cape Fear. Utilizing the talents of Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte, Scorsese crafts a psychological thriller that hits home emotionally for its viewers by savagely threatening ideas of personal security and due protection under the law.

This list gives you a taste of the top 10 movie remakes of all time. Gripping story lines, a list casts and special effects have enabled these remakes to surpass our expectations and enter the 21st century. Whilst the stars enjoy the glitz and glam of being a Hollywood celebrity, the movie lover in us wishes we were on the red carpet too. We can only hope we win the lottery or that our dreams come true.
