Geographically Desirable? Most definitely, and even more so thanks to Sarah Allyn Collier’s performance in the movie. One of the stars of the upcoming film – the story of a news anchor whose world is turned upside down – tells us about the latest addition to the ‘newswoman’ movie genre.
First things first, how did you get involved in the film?
Well, it started out pretty normal. I got the breakdown, it seemed like a great project, and so I submitted. Charlie and I hit it off right away so I think that had something to do with it 😉
How much like Claire are you?
We’re pretty similar! I usually describe Claire as a bubbly, pseudo-hippie who really just warms Nicole up to her new surroundings. Her hugs are a little more kamikaze than mine, but I think it all comes from a place of genuine compassion.
This is your first feature, I believe? Was it a long time coming? How excited were you?
Yes, this is my first feature! I was so excited about the script and my character, but I was also excited to work with Mike. I had heard nothing but great things about him and his last film. Then, when I auditioned for Claire, he was just so personable! He was laid back and yet very clear about the direction he was taking. It’s just exciting to work with someone so capable and easy to get along with.
Has it opened doors for you – just being able to have this on your CV and demo?
Well, we’re holding off on the footage for now. No spoilers! But the first few screenings definitely drew a lot of attention to my IMDB page. Also, the cast that was involved is amazing. We’ve actually kept in touch as friends and colleagues. They say “you never know,” the next great actor or director could be playing the bit part beside you, so you should always connect and collaborate. But honestly, I just love surrounding myself with good people, having fun, and seeing how far we can go. So in that sense, it created a lot of possibilities.
When working on a smaller film like this, is it inevitable that you become close to your co-stars? How well did you all get on?
I think it’s inevitable that you get to know your co-stars, but I don’t know how common it is to get along like we did. Josh and I were only in Floyd for a couple of days, but that was all it took for us to bond with each other and everyone else. The excitement and anticipation of going back for the first screening was almost unbearable!
Independent films take a long time to come together. How long has it been since the film shot?
We filmed in Floyd back in October 2013. It can be difficult to wait for the final product, but anything worth while takes a little time.
What do you think audiences will get out of Geographically Desirable?
I think people will laugh and it will tug at their heart strings in that sweet/sour old familiar way, but as an independent film, there was a little more leeway in how that was packaged. Mike added in some comedic touches that almost made the film seem like a conversation with a good friend. You have a point that you’re discussing, it’s meaningful and vaguely serious, but you just occasionally punctuate it with a lot of laughter, because nothing should be too serious between good friends.
Geographically Desirable is coming soon.
