Joy Gardner, Brian Douglas, David Oluwale, Roger Sylvester, Ibrahima Sey, Shiji Lapite. These are just 6 out of a possible 1000 names that Ken Fero’s deeply moving documentary film Injustice shines a much needed, previously denied light on as victims of British police brutality since 1969 till 1999.

The 2001 film described as a film “about the struggles for justice by the families of people that have died in police custody”. Winner of a vast array of awards, including Best Documentary at the BFM International Film Festival 2002, this heart breaking and viscerally truthful film follows the families of victims of police brutality that resulted in the unlawful deaths of their loved ones. This includes Joy Gardner who in July 28th 1993 was said to be brutally murdered by immigration police as they raided her home.

In attendance at the BFI screening (during The African Odyssey, Liberating Media day) was Joy’s mother Myrna Simpson who closes the film with her wish for Justice, not only for her beloved daughter but “justice for all”. This is a film that has been transmitted in Iran, South Africa and various international countries described by mainstream media as frequent abusers of Human Rights but has yet to get a a British TV transmission. A very important film that will leave you inspired to speak up and join the long running fight for justice. A must watch at injusticefilm.tv
