A Nice Chat With Manny Hernandez

Manny Hernandez isn’t a name you might recognize… yet. By the end of 2014, that’s unarguably going to change with the film and TV vet starring in several high-profile films. We had the opportunity to talk to Hernandez about his latest film projects.

Where are you from Manny?

I was born in Tijuana Mexico, moved to Ontario California at the age of four and currently live in Upland California.

When did you come to L.A?

I’ve been living in burbs, about forty five minutes out of LA most of my life, so in a sense I’ve always been here and at the same time I’m still not here.

What was your first break in showbiz?

My first break came through back in 2005 with the film Americanese. The director Eric Byler saw me perform at a monologue competition where I was on the verge of winning then in the middle of the third round my mind went blank, forgot my lines and before I melted on stage I somehow reverted into a stand up comedy routine. He came up to me after the show, we laughed and he wrote me a part in his film Americanese. This is how I got my SAG card.

And you were in a movie with Paris Hilton?

Yeah, funny thing is I didn’t know I was working with her until right before the director Erik Mac Arthur called action. I was so new at this that I hadn’t realized I was talking with the stand in until Paris came in and we did our scene. She was nice to and we didn’t have much of a conversation after that but I did enjoy working both with her and Jason Mewes.

Has it really been in the last couple of years that things have exploded for you? What is the turning point in your career attributed to you think?

I don’t feel like I’ve exploded yet, but the last couple of years have been much more productive for me. I don’t feel like it’s one turning point but more of a collective effort of the past few years. I’ve been patient but I’ve come to a point where I feel like I’m ready. I’ve put in the time through acting classes, working on films, shorts, producing, directing, writing and working both in front of and behind the camera have given me more preparation to take on new challenges. I’m still learning and hope I’ll always keep learning but if I were to say there was a turning point it would have to be the day I decided to take full ownership and responsibility for my career.

What kind of role do you play in “Pure Love”?

I play the role of Abel, who because of his love for his fiancé, Eve, is easily manipulated into carrying out the plan of killing Brian, a man from her past and his ex-girlfriend Amber who’s continuous contact with Abel causes friction between himself and his future wife, Eve.  There are times you can agree with his actions even though they may be wrong.  It’s a bit different because you get to root for a guy doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. Agreeing to kill in the name of love is a twisted thought but so is the thought that some people deserve to die, which is what Abel truly believes.
