Big Screen To Phone Screen: Movie Buffs Are Starstruck With Google Play Movies & TV App

Have you ever been stuck in the waiting room or on a long bus ride and thought, “why am I not catching up on my 2014 Oscar nominees right now?” Movie buffs know this feeling all too well, whether your current list focuses on the films of Stanley Kubrick or Michael Bay. Sure, a home theater would be ideal for getting fully absorbed in the story, but when you’re on the go or just want something a little more intimate, Google Play has just the right solution.

Google Play Movies & TV app

Android users aren’t the only ones who can reap the benefits of Google Play. With the company’s recent launch of the Google Play Movies & TV app for iOS, iPhone and iPad owners can get their film fix from any portable device. Chromecast users with iOS devices will also be able to stream all movies and TV shows purchased from Google Play onto their Chromecast device of choice.

How is this different from Netflix?

There are tons of movie streaming apps out there, and real film fanatics will probably have them all. But what does the Movies & TV app have that Netflix doesn’t?

  • On-Screen ID: You know that guy looks so familiar, but where have you seen him before? Or, maybe you like a certain actress in the film and want to find out more. With the app, you can select the person’s face on screen and out will pop a short ID and a quick list of their other popular performances.
  • Huge Library: Since they’re competitors, Netflix and Google Play rarely carry the same titles. It just so happens that the Movies & TV app is much more extensive. You can search through lists by genre like Classics, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Short Films, and an intriguing category called World Cinema. The home page cycles through more unique categories, like the 2014 Oscar nominees and Based on a True Story.
  • No Commitment: Nine bucks a month seems like a pretty sweet deal, but getting locked into a commitment might not end up being the most economic choice. With Google Play, you’re charged a one-time fee for your content and then it’s yours forever.

What’s the best platform?

Now that you have new streaming opportunities, it’s time to branch out from your laptop. Plenty of video geeks talk about wanting a tablet, but wondering if it’s really worth it when all they want to do is watch movies on it. The “phablet” is an amazing, practical merger of the phone and the tablet, so your device becomes all in one. The Samsung Galaxy Note phablet has an enhanced 5.7-inch Full HD display, a lightweight design, and smart innovations for simplifying your everyday life.

The Kindle Fire HD is another good alternative for movie buffs who appreciate the written word, as well. Installing the full Google Play store requires rooting the device, but it’s actually pretty easy. The Kindle comes in handy if your book starts to get boring, since you can download the movie version and get the story down in a couple of hours.
