Top 3 films of 2013

Philomena
Beautifully written and superb casting really enhance this heart wrenching true story. The combination if Steve Coogan and Dame Judy Dench wouldn’t strike as a match made in heaven, but it quite simply is. Defiantly my favourite and most memorable film if 2013.

Star Trek Into Darkness
Been of the Star Wars persuasion Abrams captivated me with his first Star Trek film. This sequak builds greatly on the work of the first film and is entertaining, well written and visually stunning. However one thing makes this film, Benedict Cumberbatch, his superb portrays of the infamous Kahn makes this movie even more compelling.

The Wolverine
Perhaps a surprising choice but Hugh Jackmans return as Wolverine saw a return to form for this previously soiled part of the x-men franchise. I found the story interesting and engaging, not just the usual 2 hours of mutant on mutant fighting that we witnessed witness with X-Men Origins: Wolveine. The Japanese setting also gave the film that much needed freshness to what was becoming a somewhat stagnant film franchise.

Top 5 for 2014

Splinter Cell
Yes that is right a movie based on the popular video game franchise from Tom Clancy, a compelling character of the video game world, I am dying to see how he translates onto the big screen.

Captain America: Winter Soldier
I was a big fan of the first Captain America, and am looking forward to see how the character embodies a movie set in the 21st century.

Muppets: Most Wanted
Yes I am a big child, the last Muppets film saw me sat in a charity screening as the only person who hadn’t brought there kids along, I found the last film funny, charming and entertaining and can’t wait to see them return to the big screen.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
I loved The Amazing Spider-Man , even more so after the festering turd that was Spider-Man 3. The return of Andrew Garfield pitted against Jamie Foxx as Electro will make for an interesting watch.

X-Men Days Of Future Past
I thoroughly enjoyed X-men first class and felt that as a film it saved the X-Men franchise. Now Stewart, McAvoy, Fassbender and McKellan all on the same screen, that alone is enough to get me watching.

I agree with you about Cumberbatch, but I’m not a big fan of Star Trek Into Darkness. It really lost me in the last act, when Khan is creating massive destruction. The 9/11 imagery is way on the nose, and we’re supposed to care more about Kirk surviving then the hordes who died in the crash? The tone felt way off during the entire last act, and it really hurt the movie. That said, it’s still solid entertainment.
