The Waterhole Review

Review by WallPaint.

So. This is my first blog of anything… let alone a film review… When I was given this DVD some time ago I wasn’t too sure on it, it didn’t seem my normal ‘type’ of film, and if I’m honest, I did have to watch it a couple of times to truly get into the pace of the film.

The story is set in a small town in America around the main character Miller (Patrick J. Adams) at a point in his life when he is coming up to graduation from college, having issues with his cheating girlfriend, and seems to spend most evenings in his local ‘Waterhole’. Miller is going nowhere fast, this is highlighted when both his best friends Murphy (Matt Stasi) and Jim (Jade Carter) are moving on with their lives.

Murphy buys a bar pretty early on in the film and Jim gets engaged to his long term girlfriend. Miller is stuck! And he thinks it is everyone else’s fault, it is not until his waster friend Cracker (Joey Klien) comes into the picture does Miller start to reevaluate things. A trip to see Cracker in rehab sparks a change, and what seemed as a quite a depressing start to the film in the ‘Waterhole’ ends with rather positive outlook to the future for Miller in the same ‘Waterhole’.

This film is about a journey most of us will face – figuring out what we want from life, I found it a little slow paced in places and even a little depressing in parts. It isn’t what I would normally pick out for myself, I like films to have a bit more of a pace to them to keep my attention, but I’m glad I watched it. It was a nice break from the romantic comedies and chick flicks I’m use to. If you like the slow paced, indie dramas which are about finding yourself and embracing life then give this film a go.
