BRWC Is 3: The Year So Far… Happy Birthday BRWC

By Deedee Spears.

In honor of BRWC celebrating another esteemed birthday, I, Deedee Spears have taken the liberty of writing “The Year So Far”. Pretty much a “ghetto” review of 2 films which I enjoyed, and 2 films which didn’t really “rock my boat”. So without further hesitation here they are….

The 2 films which didn’t rock my boat.

Thor
Okay now before you banish me from the realm of Asgard let me say this. I am actually a HUGE fan of Thorand Natalie Portman. So when I walked out of the theater after seeing this I felt let down not only as critic, paying customer etc etc. I felt let down as a fan. I could see that Chris Hemsworth put a lot of work into the physical side of the character. But surely I’m not the only person who noticed his accent switching between Nordic God and Australian thespian? Natalie Portman arguably one of the most talented actresses of her generation wasn’t used enough as was the mighty talents of Stellan Skarsgaard and Sir Anthony Hopkins. I honestly believe it could have been better but thats just my opinion.

The Green Lantern
Now before you start whispering “Deedee Spears sucks because he HATES comic book adaptations” I have to say “I love comic book adaptations…Just good ones”. I have lost count of how many times I have watched Batman Begins and Blade whereas The Incredible Hulk, Superman Returns or even the latest Captain America were enjoyed enough to see more than once. So The Green Lantern I believe was pretty weak in comparison to the aforementioned films. I dont think you can blame the cast? You can see Ryan Reynolds is trying his hardest in the lead role of Hal Jordan/The Green Lantern (although Blake Lively does seem a bit wooden in some scenes). But for me the highlight was seeing New Zealand Maori acting legend Temuera Morrison in a Hollywood blockbuster (albeit briefly) as mortally wounded alien Abin Sur. Which backs up my argument that “Temuera Morrison can play anything” I have seen him play an abusive drunk Maori father (Once Were Warriors) A Pakistani helicopter pilot (Vertical Limit), A genetically enhanced space mercenary (Star Wars Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones) and now he’s a freaking purple alien who wears a magical ring…Say no more!

The 2 Films Which I enjoyed.

Super 8
Okay so I grew up in the 80’s, When films like Silver Bullet, E.T., Gremlins, The Goonies and my favorite of that era The Lost Boys were screaming through the cinemas. You know the type of films where you could take your whole family and get some cheap P.G thrills (although The Lost Boys shouldn’t be on that list I think). So after I saw Super 8 it sort of took me back to that era of film. The young actors were incredible, the ways in which they held your attention and delivered emotion was masterful as was the clever revealing of the plot. To see Spielberg going back to his roots is sort of like listening to Metallica start playing thrash metal again.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2
Now before you start moaning “Why is Deedee giving props to kids films” I gotta say this. I’m not even a Harry Potter fan! I think the books are far better. So when I walked out of the theatres after seeing this film I kept thinking “Maybe I have been a bit of a hater…” Because this film actually kicked arse.  I know I was surprised more than anyone! But I’m gonna be for real this is actually a good film. It kept me still in my chair with all its twists and turns, character arcs, hero revelations and arguably one of the coolest twists I have seen since The Usual Suspects. Definitely worth seeing.
