Production has commenced on Just Jim, the directorial feature debut from Submarine and The Double star Craig Roberts. Roberts plays the title role opposite Emile Hirsch (Lone Survivor, Into the Wild). Just Jim tells the story of Jim, a teenage loser whose life is turned inside out by the appearance of an enigmatic, handsome neighbour. Aneirin Hughes (Y Gwyll / Hinterland), Nia Roberts (The Facility), Richard Harrington (Y Gwyll / Hinterland), Matthew Aubrey (The Gospel Of Us) and newcomers Ryan Owen and Charlotte Randall also star. Soda Pictures will release in the UK and Ireland in 2015.

Craig Roberts shot into the limelight in Richard Ayoade’s 2010 Indie hit Submarine for which he won the BAFTA Cymru Award for ‘Best Actor’ and the London Critics’ Circle Film Award for ‘Young British Performer of the Year’. Since then he has built an impressive body of work across film and television. In 2014 Roberts appeared alongside Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne in Neighbors and in 22 Jump Street with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Roberts recently finished work on Kill Your Friends, the feature adaptation of John Niven’s cult novel of the same name, directed by Owen Harris, alongside Nick Hoult. Roberts’s directing career began with Avocado Baby, a music video for Los Campesinos.

Just Jim was selected as one of three finalists of Ffilm Cymru Wales’ emerging talent scheme, Cinematic. Cinematic was devised and developed in partnership with the BFI Film Fund, BBC Films, Creative Skillset, S4C, and Soda Pictures to support emerging filmmaking talent from Wales in making contemporary, dynamic and distinctive feature films. Just Jim is produced by Adrian Bate and Pip Broughton of Vox Pictures and will shoot on location in the Caerphilly county borough, Wales, over 3 weeks.
Roberts says, “It’s surreal to be back in my home town shooting a movie. I’m excited to work with a great cast and I hope Emile likes Maesycwmmer.”

Just Jim tells the story of Jim (Roberts), a very average teenager. His best friend, Michael (Owen), has abandoned him for the cool crowd and his only remaining friend is his dog. Nothing exciting ever happens to him, until…..

Dean (Hirsch) moves into the house next door. Dean is older, American and on the run. Dean offers Jim friendship, a makeover and lessons in how to be cool. With Dean’s help Jim achieves his ‘state of cool’. He becomes a winner and the most popular boy in school.

Jim starts to live the dream, or is it just a nightmare?
