From directing, to writing, to acting, these eight titles are arguably some of Allen’s most classic and successful pieces of work, featuring outstanding cast lists. The titles being released are:

    BULLETS OVER BROADWAY

Set in 1920s New York, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY is directed by Woody Allen and tells the story of a struggling playwright forced to cast a mobster’s talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it produced. The film stars John Cusack, Diane Wiest, Mary Louise Parker and Chazz Palminteri.

    CELEBRITY

With an all-star cast featuring Kenneth Branagh, Leonardo DiCaprio, Judy Davis and Charlize Theron, CELEBRITY (written and directed by Woody Allen) sees the fortunes of a husband and wife differ drastically after they divorce.

    DECONSTRUCTING HARRY

As well as writing and directing DECONSTRUCTING HARRY, Woody Allen stars as Harry Block. Suffering from writer’s block and eagerly awaiting his writing award, Block starts to remember events from his past and scenes from his best-selling books as characters, real and fictional, come back to haunt him.

    EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU

Featuring singing by actors who are not usually known for this skill, EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU is about a New York girl who sets her father up with a beautiful woman in a shaky marriage, while her half-sister gets engaged. Starring Woody Allen (who also wrote and directed the film), Goldie Hawn, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore and Edward Norton.

    MIGHTY APHRODITE

Romantic comedy MIGHTY APHRODITE stars Allen, Helena Bonham Carter, Pamela Blair and Mira Sorvino, who received the 1995 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. When he discovers his adopted son is a genius, a New York sportswriter (Allen) seeks out the boy’s birth mother: a prostitute.

    SMALL TIME CROOKS

A loser of a crook (Woody Allen) and his wife (Tracey Ullman) strike it rich when a botched bank job’s cover business becomes a spectacular success. SMALL TIME CROOKS also stars Hugh Grant and Elaine May.

    SWEET AND LOWDOWN

In the 1930s, fictional jazz guitarist Emmet Ray (Sean Penn) idolises Django Reinhardt, faces gangsters and falls in love with a mute (Samantha Morton). Both Penn and Morton received Oscar nominations for their role in SWEET AND LOWDOWN, which also stars Uma Thurman, Woody Allen and Anthony LaPaglia.

    WILD MAN BLUES

WILD MAN BLUES is a 1997 documentary film directed by Barbara Kopple, about the musical avocation of actor/director/comic Woody Allen. The film takes its name from a jazz composition sometimes attributed to Jelly Roll Morton and sometimes to Louis Armstrong and recorded by both (among others). Allen’s love of early 20th century New Orleans music is depicted through his 1996 tour of Europe with his New Orleans Jazz Band. Allen has played clarinet with this band for over 25 years.

    What If

Here is the trailer and TV Spot to the upcoming film What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) and Adam Driver (HBO’s Girls).  What If is released in UK cinemas on 20th August.

    Trailer –

What If follows Wallace and Chantry, who meet by chance at a party and feel the chemistry, but Wallace is recovering from a failed relationship and Chantry has a long-term boyfriend. Acting with the best of intentions and a touch of denial, Wallace and Chantry take on the challenge of being just friends. The adventure is both rocky and very funny as our protagonists navigate the perils of unintended nude camping, risqué wardrobe malfunctions, badly timed international air travel and generally terrible advice from their friends.

    TV Spot –

With a raucously funny script and standout performances from Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan and Adam Driver, What If is a charming original comedy about the tried and tested question of whether men and women can ever really be just friends.

  • Aspiring Filmmaker Captures Declining NY Dance Subculture

Aspiring Filmmaker Captures Declining NY Dance Subculture

A Kingston University graphics student has used his camera to tell the story of the endangered art form of subway dancing in New York City. Scott Carthy, who is originally from Drogheda, Ireland, arrived in the United States with his camera in March of this year with the intention of documenting the declining subculture which is currently being clamped down.

The result of Scott’s trip is the seven-minute film 1050.6(c), which takes its name from the section of the New York City Transit Rules of Conduct which prohibits performers from dancing within the subway cars. This local law has largely been ignored till now but will shortly be more stringently enforced.

Scott’s interest in the topic was initially piqued in September of last year when he chanced upon a poorly lit, low-quality YouTube video of the performers in action. Unlike New York’s rush-hour commuters, who sometimes looked upon the dancers as an unwelcome nuisance, Scott said he had been entranced by the unique artistry and talent of the performers. “I thought to myself, if I can capture these guys with a high-quality camera, I could make something intriguing that might spark people’s interest. The challenge was that it was all taking place in New York and, at the time, I was a cash-strapped student based in the UK.”

1050.6(c) from Scott Carthy on Vimeo.

Scott is now determined to find a way to return to shoot a feature-length version of the movie and, to that end, has set-up a Kickstarter public fundraising campaign to try and get the project in motion.  “I want to film these amazing performers now, because this could be the last chance to record this art form,” the 22 year old explained. “If no one else does it, it will be gone.”

Scott’s film takes a snapshot of social and political change in one of the world’s most famous cities, and captures the artistry and often unappreciated talents of New York’s subway performers through the eyes of an aspiring young film-maker.
