    Beneath The Earth

Beneath The Earth are happy to announce their 2012 Call for Entries. After another successful run last year where 24,000 people from 90 different countries watched their Official Selection, they are now accepting submissions for the 2012 festival, which will take place in November.

What’s particularly exciting this year is that moving forward they’ll be accepting films that were produced from as far back as 1990 onward. This decision was made after realizing that so many films have come and gone on the circuit having barely scratched the surface of the number of viewers they can reach. So they’re extending the search for cinematic gems to those films that may now be sitting on the shelf.

The early deadline is 6/1/12, so now’s a good time to submit. Learn more about submitting here.

  • Tuesday, After Christmas Screening

    Tuesday, After Christmas Screening

Award-winning Romanian director, Radu Muntean is set to attend a special screening of his critically acclaimed film Tuesday, After Christmas (15) at London’s Riverside Studios on Wednesday 9th May to coincide with its UK DVD release. The event is organised jointly by the Romanian Cultural Institute and Second Run DVD.

Tuesday, After Christmas is an astutely observed, deeply felt adult drama about a man who finds himself in love with two women. Paul is successful and married to Adriana but is having an affair with the younger Raluca. In the days leading to Christmas, Paul decides he needs to choose between his two lives.

Directed by Muntean and written by his frequent collaborator Alexandru Baciu, this frank, resonant and highly acclaimed film examines the emotional impact of adultery upon its three participants. A fixture on many international ‘Best Films of 2011’ lists, Tuesday, After Christmas presents a fresh and original perspective on an age-old human condition, and succeeds brilliantly through impeccable direction and remarkable performances. DVD Special Features include exclusively filmed interview with Radu Muntean and a new English subtitle translation. Tuesday, After Christmas is released on DVD by Second Run on 14th May.

Commenting on his film, Radu says, “I have tried to put into film the voyeuristic sensation that one might get from looking inside people’s houses, from walking into a couple’s kitchen or bedroom. Marital intimacy can be more captivating than a good action movie. This is not a film about guilt. This is a film about choices. A crossroads in life, where you feel you can control your own destiny. This is when you are at your most vulnerable, even though, for the first time ever you may feel you hold the power to turn your life around.”

  • I Am Bruce Lee – Review

I Am Bruce Lee – Review

I’ll admit it, I’m not exactly what you would call a Bruce Lee fan. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched a Bruce Lee film.

Despite that I loved every minute of this documentary.

Directed by Pete McCormack, the film follows Lee’s life story from a child star in Hong Kong to the international superstar he became.

Featuring a number of interviews with the man himself as well as his family, the film paints a deep, multilayered portrait of a man caught between the East and the West.

It was remarkable to see how articulate and philosophical Bruce could be, particularly in his interview with Pierre Berton (where the famous ‘be water’ speech comes from, see- Bruce Lee – Pierre Berton interview) and a further revelation to find that he in fact taught Chinese philosophy at an American high school.

The range of talking heads appearing in the documentary is a testament to just how much Lee has influenced modern culture. MMA fighters (including ‘Haywire’ star Gina Carano), Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, Kobe Bryant, Mickey Rourke and cultural theorists like Cardiff University’s Paul Bowman all weigh in on the wider significance of the man and his work while the more personal side of the legend is filled in by his widow Linda and his daughter Shannon.

McCormack’s direction brings a pace and vitality that is only appropriate given the subject matter, the use of captions and quotations throughout the film is edited expertly, words appear on screen; sharp, bold and only for a second, mimicking Lee’s own lightning fast reactions.

Weather or not you have any interest in Bruce Lee, I would urge you to seek this out. To many he is an icon emblazoned on t-shirts, shouting in a high pitched voice with a pair of Nunchucks. In reality the man was an incredible athlete, teacher and role model who spanned cultural and ethnic gaps throughout the world.

No matter what level of your Lee knowledge I Am Bruce Lee will engage, inform and above all entertain.
