  • Sledge’s Dream Home Review

Dream Home is a film starring Cheng Li-sheung as a young, upwardly mobile professional finally ready to invest in her first home. But when the deal falls through, she is forced to keep her dream alive – even if it means keeping her would-be neighbours dead.

This film is awesome!  I cannot recommend this film enough.  A blood soaked mortality/property fest…  Director Pang-Ho-Cheung has film festival pedigree , and you can tell with this witty and gory piece.

A original horror is pretty hard to achieve now, but Dream Home has a lot going for it.  The strong cast, the humour, the Hitchcockian touches.
Some of the kills and set pieces are fantastically put together, and blood-drenched from the get-go, although some of the scenes can be a little squeamish and uncomfortable.  Some of the deaths are very inventive, a scene with a pregnant woman is a prime example…
It’s out NOW, at Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue and Showcase cinemas across the country, and I tell you now, go and see it!

  • Film Flipper

    Film Flipper
During my usual website browse, I found out that telecoms company Orange are helping you decide what movies to go and see with their 1920’s inspired Film Flipper.

Still can’t work out what movie to see? It can be a bit of a conundrum. Rom-com or horror? Tear-jerking or sick making? Three dimensions or two? Well try going 50/50 with The Film Flipper.

Just type in your tricky choices – one for heads and one for tails.  Flip the coin… and let fate decide what you eat your popcorn in front of.

  • The 10 Biggest Summer Blockbusters Of 2011?

The summer blockbuster season is or at least should be when the best, big budgeted movies come out. Although the last few years it has been almost exclusive to remakes and sequels such as last summers Iron Man 2, The Karate Kid, The A-Team and of course Twilight to name a few on a very long list there were still a few original films that brought back some faith in the summer blockbuster. I’m looking at you Inception and The Expendables.

This got me thinking what can we look forward to next year. And yes I think they are almost all some kind of comic book or sequel of some kind. So in no order…

    Thor
Continuing with setting up the all mighty Avengers movie. Thor gets the big Hollywood treatment for the first time with no less then Kenneth Branagh directing and Natalie Portman staring this may just be something special and come out of nowhere just like Iron Man did.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Captain Jack Sparrow is back again with the great Geoffrey Rush but without Bloom and original director Gore Verbinski .  Instead we have Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz and director Rob Marshall all trying to get to that fountain of youth. Hopefully we can get back to the fun of the original and not have to think as hard as we did with the third.

    The Hangover 2

Yep the boys are back and this time in Thailand. This one was supposed to have Mel Gibson as the big cameo but he is crazy now or something (god bless you Mel, I still love you) so they have none other then ex president Bill Clinton. Hopefully this can be as funny the second time as it was the first.

    Mission Impossible 4

Yeah I know, but this one is directed by Brad Bird ( The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) in his first live action movie. Maybe he can make Tom Cruise the bad ass he once was again.

    Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds brings the somewhat unknown (here at least) comic book character to life in a big way. Promising big action and an epic sci-fi storyline that stays faithful to the comic and overseen by the man who gave us Casino Royale.   I hope this is amazing.
    TRANSFORMERS 3

Yeah, 2 sucked hairy balls but they knew it so maybe just maybe this will bring us more of the best bits from the first. Just maybe with a little less shaky cam please. Damn it, there is also no really hot Megan Fox. Maybe I’m not looking forward to this now.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II

With the first part about to come out and getting the best reviews so far looks like old Harry is gonna go out on a bang. So that will surly cement its highest grossing film series of all time for some years yet and maybe even get old J.K to type out another Potter book? Me thinks so…

    THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA

As well as Thor, Captain America starring Chris Evans will also be making his debut on the big screen.Set in WW2 and before all the others pre-avenger movies and staring agent smith Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull this could be some kind of fun.

    COWBOYS AND ALIENS

Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau is directing the big screen adaptation of the comic book of the same name, which is going to blend together science fiction with a western. He’s attracted Harrison Ford to star (in his most interesting role in some time) opposite Daniel Craig, as the pair fight off an alien invasion in 1800s Arizona. How can this not be amazing? Trailer now please.
    PRIEST

Priest tells the story of a warrior priest in a post apocalyptic world who goes out in search of his kidnapped niece. Kidnapped, of course, by VAMPIRES! Starring Paul Bettany this has one great trailer so lets hope it can live up to it.

So these are just a few films off the top of my head that we’ll all be spending our money on next summer.

Which one are you looking forward to most? And which are you not?

  • When Disaster Strikes Or… When Singers Act!

Let’s be fair this subject is a bit old hat and the titles a bit unfair. But often musicians (through there own choice or at the insistence of agents and producers) find themselves trading lines with seasoned professionals with, usually, mixed results.

I thought I’d mention five of my favourite musician turned actor moments. There’s probably many I’ll remember later so they’ll probably be a second installment and please comment with your own favs but here’s some of mine.
    1) Tom Waits in Bram Stoker’s Dracula
He started off as a lounge lizard, then became a jazz bohemian, then he became the crazed love child of Howlin’ Wolf and Captain Beefheart, then he just went nuts. Tom Waits writes and sings songs that will break your heart or rip it from your chest. In Dracula he’s in more of a ravenous mood. Oh how he chews the scenery and it’s glorious. Campy British accent, crazed hair and over-acting to the extreme where it becomes a delight to watch. Even his appearances in Mystery Men and Wristcutters seem tame compared with his deranged ramblings to a green mist that sounds like Gary Oldman.
    2) Nick Cave in Johnny Suede
Taking a cameo role in a pretty average Brad Pitt vehicle, with a less than great performance. The wonderful Mr. Cave will always be remembered in this film for me because of his shocking white hair, baring the name of Freak Storm and chastising Brad Pitt for not sharing his fried chicken with him. He also sings a lovely blues song which is a bonus.
    3) David Johansen – Scrooged
For years I didn’t even know he was a singer, young as I was when I first encountered the New York Dolls guru as the Ghost of Christmas past. Any hint of his flamboyant, make-up wearing, swagger is forgotten (apart from the elf ears) and his performance does make you yearn to see what else he could do with the right material, Car 54, Where Are You? doesn’t count. His “whatever” attitude fits right in with the his role of the Ghost who’s seen and done everything. And I bet Mr. Johansen has.
    4) Johnny Cash – A Gunfight
Johnny Cash was always one of the great storytellers through songs. His stoic and authoritative vocals puts you right into whatever story he would be singing about be it a murder ballad or a tale of workers on the rail road. Those talents didn’t quite translate to screen. But in his role as Abel Cross he brought an air of world-weariness, a gunslinger who’s tired of killing. Playing against a charismatic Kirk Douglas he stands up well. Douglas is the showman, Cash is the straight man. Another notable Cash role was playing the hardened criminal against Ron Howard’s ten year old scamp in 25 Minutes to Live.
    5) Busta Rhymes – Higher Learning
There were a few more singers I could mention but I felt compelled to give a mention to Trevor Smith (that be what his mother calls him) break out role in John Singelton’s college melodrama. In a film that is so over-blown with “issues” – nazis, lesbians, militants, drugs, casual sex, Laurence Fishburne’s accent, Busta Rhymes as the black panther ‘Dreads’ is one of the more entertaining things in the film. He’s just nuts in it. He’s not in it a lot. But like Waits in Dracula whenever he appears you watch him. Even against the more “seasoned” rap vet Ice Cube he just jumps from the screen screaming “Woo-Hah” in your face.
Next time… the wonders of Grace Jones in A View To A Kill.
    Anyone else have any favs?
