Basketball Movies That Have Left A Mark

As movies reflect our interests in life, it comes as no surprise that there are so many sports related movies especially regarding basketball. It is a widely played sport all over the world and the NBA is followed by sports enthusiasts and hard core fans not just in the United States. It is probably the most popular game after soccer.

There are many movies which center their narrative on competitive sports, they are full of drama and usually they are about the main protagonist raising against all odds. No matter if the story revolves around characters in high-school, college or professional sports. This is exactly what excites sports fans too, with the online sports betting community at an all-time high with online sportsbooks like 888sport, Bovada and many more, which are constantly updated. After all it has become a viable legal source for earning some money by implementing these sportsbooks online betting tips.

Some sports movies give also inspiration in getting fit, and playing sports. Let’s celebrate some of the most inspirational Basketball movies:

    He Got Game

Released in 1998 (runs for 2 hours 17 minutes), Denzel Washington starred as Jake Shuttlesworth, the father of a top basketball player in the country, Jesus Shuttlesworth.

The story is about sports agreements behind the scenes while there are some powerful interests in the background. Jake Shuttlesworth was released for one week from prison in order to persuade his son, Jesus to play for the governor’s alma mater. In return, Jake is promised an early release from prison if his son can agree to the “Big State” agreement. Of course that will not be easy since Jesus cannot forgive him for the death of his mother.

    Hoop Dreams

It is a documentary which was originally planned to run as a half hour PBS special on two African-American Chicago high schoolers as they chase their dreams of playing professional basketball. The success was such that it ended with 250 hours of filming after five years following the lives of William Gates and Arthur Agee.

It played to rave reviews also thanks to the action on the court which gave to it the necessary drama when set against the harsh reality of life away from the sport. This film was a social documentary on the great distance between William and Arthur poverty-stricken background and their dreams of a life in the big leagues. After 25 years the film is still able to enthrall new audiences, and remains a classic of sports movies.

    Hoosiers

A must watch NBA film who was released in 1986 with a great cast: Gore Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper, Jerry Goldsmith, and others. The story is a about a coach and a town’s love for basketball.

The town looked up to him to help them coach their team to victory but obstacles came along the way. For all basketball fans and enthusiasts this movie although old merits a viewing.

    Space Jam

This one is for sure one of the most well-known films built around the basketball. Space Jam was a commercial success and created a blending of animation and live action, which was refreshing and new. And Michael Jordan was a major draw for movie goers and sports fans.

A sequel titled Space Jam 2 that stars LeBron James has been scheduled for release in 2021 and it is already gathering interest. Let’s hope it will be much more fun and hilarious than the first one.

    White Man Can’t Jump

This one is definitely on the must watch list. Ron Shelton’s funny 1992 comedy combined with the physical presence and smart mouth of Wesley Snipes’ Sidney Deane with a hustler played by Woody Harrelson. Harrelson’s Billy Hoyle pretends to be terrible at Basketball and hustles money from unsuspecting players. When Deane sees what’s going on he decides to get in on the con and that’s when all the fun ensues and the hilarity is unstoppable. It makes for a good laugh and fun to watch movie even today.

    Coach Carter

Released in 2005 it is more of a documentary drama about the NBA, which gives a lot of insight about the game. The main protagonist, Ken Carter who was trying to be the best coach he could be for the basketball team at Richmond High school. This coach trained and motivated his players to be better versions of themselves. The movie starred Samuel Jackson, Rob Brown, Channing Tatum, Rick Gonzalez and Ashanti.

We can always expect top-notch basketball and other sports movies that reflects our love for sports in general and for basketball in particular. This movie selection reflects our preferences and it will surely give you a good watch and great entertainment when it comes to basketball, and just as these movies give us always some motivation, it is always good to persevere and also engage in some sport of your choice.

  • West Ham Edition: Bits & Pieces

West Ham Edition: Bits & Pieces

Helen Mirren, Oscar®-winner for Best Actress performance in The Queen, tells the story of Anne’s life in the documentary Anne Frank: Parallel Stories. Born in Frankfurt on 12th June 1929, this documentary is dedicated to her memory and has been created to tell the story of her life to mark what would have been her 90th birthday.

Quezon’s Game stars Raymond Bagatsing, Rachel Alejandro & Kate Alejandrino and is directed by Matthew E. Rosen who makes his feature-length directorial debut. The film has received acclaim at numerous festivals, including 12 awards at the Cinema WorldFest Awards in Canada and four at The WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.

In the tradition of Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, and inspired by today’s obsession with reality TV and social media stars, writer-director Steven Jay Bernheim’s clever mockumentary fixes on a Paris Hilton-esque heiress named “London” (newcomer Julia Faye West) who is struggling to regain fame after being pushed out of the limelight by three Kardashian-type sisters named “The Kims.” London’s life is a self-indulgent maelstrom of product endorsements, talent managers, pet psychics, private jets, fashion shows, yachts, and a celebrity posse. Despite her wackiness, she ultimately makes it back to the top of the heap. This parody of America’s infatuation with fame raises the question: are these celebs-for-no-reason marketing geniuses, or are they just the accidental beneficiaries of the American public’s stupidity?

Directed, written and produced by Marhoul, The Painted Bird, features a staggering central performance from the young Petr Kotlár alongside a star-studded international ensemble including Udo Kier, Stellan Skarsgård, Harvey Keitel, Julian Sands and Barry Pepper. The film has won ecstatic acclaim, with The Guardian’s Xan Brooks describing the film as “a monumental piece of work” rewarding the film with a five-star review. The film is also one of ten films that has advanced to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category (formerly known as Foreign Language Film) for the 92nd Academy Awards.  Ninety-one films were eligible in the category.

Special agent Vladimir is the Secret Service’s top spy, but he’s not so good at obeying orders. Following a reckless mission, the maverick agent is sent on a disciplinary assignment to a remote off-shore platform to guard a top-secret cargo… with only timid rookie Hector for company. But when a gang of mysterious figures break into the platform and steal the mysterious consignment, the pair must embark on a thrilling undercover mission to find the stolen goods, redeem themselves as spies, and save the world from the brink of extinction. With a topical environmental message, smart humour, a horde of zany animal characters reminiscent of Disney’s Zootropolis and enough gadgets to satisfy James Bond, Spycies is a slick spy adventure that will entertain the whole family.

  • Final Girls Berlin Film Festival 2020

Final Girls Berlin Film Festival 2020

The fifth edition of Final Girls Berlin Film Festival will take place between February 6 – 9, 2020 at City Kino Wedding continuing to raise the bar by showcasing horror written directed, and/or produced by women and non-binary filmmakers.

Festival co-director Eli Lewy calls this year’s festival edition the “most expansive and international yet, presenting a wide array of films by visionary filmmakers that represent the diversity and originality that can be found in the current horror landscape.”

The exciting program features eight curated short blocks and nine feature films, a horror-inspired self-defense workshop, an exhibition, a festival party with multimedia drag performances, and specialist talks on horror martyrs, made-for-TV horror, ‘female monsters,’ and ‘bad mothers’ in Mexican horror cinema.

“Horror is a very elastic term,” adds fellow co-director Sara Neidorf, “and we’re excited to discover films that make us question and expand our conceptions of what horror can be, both in ways that are distant from and uncannily near our own realities.”

Final Girls Berlin Film Festival showcases horror cinema that’s directed, written, or produced by women and non-binary filmmakers. We are committed to creating space for female voices and visions, whether monstrous, heroic or some messy combination of the two, in the horror genre. We’ve seen more than enough representations of women as beautified victims and constructions of male fantasies or anxieties, and are working towards the primacy of women as subjects and storytellers in horror.

The “final girl” horror trope refers to the last woman standing in a horror film, who manages to escape or defeat the film’s villain/monster (e.g. in ALIEN and HALLOWEEN). While “final girl” is an ambivalently feminist figure in film criticism, often desexualized and tainted with the male director’s moralization and punishment of other female characters’ behavior, the festival utilizes this figure as a starting point for carving out space for new and undiscovered positions of power for women in horror, not only in front of but also behind the camera.

** Our definition of women includes anyone with female experience –past or present– and is trans-inclusive. Anyone who feels addressed by the term is welcome to submit their films to the festival. **
