The Most Influential Movies Of 2019

The Most Influential Movies Of 2019 .

2019 was a great year for influential movies. Seems like this year, unlike many before that, there was no shortage of good quality movies and TV shows, with multiple perspectives and diversity that has previously been largely unmatched. What resonates with people in these movies can be quite subjective because of their demographic.

The Oscars are just around the corner so the academy will name the best motion picture of the year in just two weeks. But despite what the academy might think there are some movies, that while being great and moving, have also had influence far beyond what some of the oscar-nominated movies will ever have. There are a lot of influential factors that go into this and it depends on the case, the plot but most importantly on the time of the release whether or not it manages to create a new trend, a new standard that others will follow in u[coming projects.

We’ve combined 3 major movies that came out in 2019 that manages to create a trend of their own and tell a story in a way that it has not been told before.

    Parasite

Parasite was among most people’s favorite movies of the year. Not only was it revolutionary for gaining worldwide recognition for the fully South Korean films, but it resonated so much with people because often queues of the plot. We haven’t really seen something so fresh in many man-months perhaps years even. The plot is so unique, the director’s works is an example of craftsmanship and this movie managed to single-handedly take the entire Korean movie industry to another level, while also inspiring young film directors to take more risks when it comes to plotlines which they will probably do with more confidence since Parasite did so well in all countries despite the culture.

Parasite became the talk of all-important awards shows and continues to stay relevant even months after its initial release. It has become an instant classic that is fully unique and perfected in every aspect. Parasite definitely changed an industry standard and opened up the door for other intention films as well.

    Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is still a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe so it might seem weird that Captain Marvel could be cast as the most influential movie of 2019. But even after wonder woman, the attitudes towards female superheroes seemed to center around their appearance. While Brie Larson is a still conventionally attractive marketable face for a movie like this her character doesn’t rely that much of the appearance the emphasis is not on that specific aspect of her personality.

It also finally made it easy for people to understand the importance of such movies and how important they are for people who often feel underrepresented in their favorite movies. Franchises like these can often lean towards lower quality plotlines, making the movies that they think the people want to see, even if it is not actually true. But franchises like these need to be treated with more seriousness because they have such a cultural impact. One such movie that ended up being one of the most defining pop culture phenomena in the 2000s and 2010s, with major fashion and entertainment outlets releasing clothing, online slot games based on the Planet of Apes.

Still, the films were consistent and high quality and have managed to stay loved by their fans even years after the initial release. While that is one positive example of the franchise doing it right, there are dozens of examples of franchise closing the sigh of what is keeping them afloat as well as realizing that the franchises might need to adapt to the time period and the general attitudes that are present in the world that should be reflected in the movies.

    Marriage Story

This particular movie will likely remain as an example for future filmmakers that will try and depict the stories of real-life marriage or long term relationships. We often see the beginning stages of partnership that are usually full of bliss, but we rarely get a realistic view of the relationship between two normal people. While some may argue that these two are far from being normal to average, the most important fact is that their relationship feels real and grounded.

It goes through the same emotions and ups and downs as any long term relationship between people who may love each other but aren’t necessarily great partners. This movie is very unique in its way of portraying the hardships of divorce and offered a powerful depiction of disintegrating relationships that often get overlooked in the movie industry.

Marriage Story will likely remain as an example of how you can manage to portray hardships of real-life without losing the integrity or making one person into a one-dimensional villain, avoiding to take a realistic viewpoint.

  • Best Picture Odds Three Weeks Away From 92nd Academy Awards

Best Picture Odds Three Weeks Away From 92nd Academy Awards

Best Picture Odds Three Weeks Away from 92nd Academy Awards

The 92nd annual Academy Awards will take place in just under three weeks’ time, hailing from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, Feb. 9th, at 8:00 PM ET.

The nominees were announced on Jan. 13th and, this year, nine films received a nod for Best Picture. They are, in alphabetical order (with director):

    • 1917 (Sam Mendes)
    • Ford vs Ferrari (James Mangold)
    • The Irishman (Martin Scorsese)
    • Jojo Rabbit (Taiki Waititi)
    • Joker (Todd Phillips)
    • Little Women (Greta Gerwig)
    • Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach)
    • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino)
    • Parasite (Bong Joon-ho)

According to Sascha Paruk of SportsBettingDime.com, whose site tracks the Academy Awards odds throughout the year, the favorite to win Best Picture has changed drastically in the week-plus since the nominations were announced.

On Jan. 13th, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was favored to take home the statuette. But as of today, Sam Mendes’ 1917, which also won Best Drama at the Golden Globes, is now heavily favored.

The table below shows the odds for each Best Picture nominee on the day nominations were announced followed by its odds as Jan. 21st. The number in parentheses is the win probability implied by the odds.

    Best Picture Nominees

Film Jan 13th Odds Jan 21st Odds
     1917  +275 (26.7% chance to win) -115 (53.5% chance to win)
    Once Upon a Time in Hollywood +125 (44.4%) +294 (25.4%)
    Parasite +350 (22.2%) +344 (22.5%)
    Joker +750 (11.8%) +1475 (6.3%)
    The Irishman +1100 (8.3%) +2850 (3.4%)
    Jojo Rabbit +3050 (3.2%) +5500 (1.8%)
    Marriage Story +2900 (3.3%) +6375 (1.5%)
    Little Women +4500 (2.2%) +9850 (1.0%)
    Ford vs Ferrari +55000 (0.2%) +15000 (0.7%)

Paruk notes that, the main reason sportsbooks shift their odds so drastically is because people are betting on certain films. In this case, bettors are clearly putting a lot of money on 1917 taking home Best Picture.

A win for 1917 would not be without precedent. The World War I epic would merely be the latest in a long list of war movies to take home Best Picture, a list which includes Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Schindler’s List, Patton, and many more.

Mendes has also directed a Best Picture-winner before: American Beauty in 1999. A total of 12 directors (all men, shockingly) have directed multiple Best Picture-winners, showcasing the Academy’s penchant for re-rewarding those it reveres.

The main competitors for 1917 – Parasite and Once Upon a Time – can’t say the same. Neither Tarantino nor Joon-ho have directed a Best Picture-winner. In addition, Parasite is a foreign-language film from South Korea, and no foreign-language film has ever won Best Picture. Eleven have been nominated previously without success.

There is some sentiment that Tarantino is “due” for a win, and the Oscars have a history of rewarding industry legends who have previously been shutout (think Scorsese for The Departed or Denzel Washington for Training Day). But this is actually Q’s first-ever nomination for Best Picture. If the pro-Tarantino sentiment builds, he is more likely to take home Best Director (which he’s previously been nominated for twice) than see his film win the biggest award of the night.

Tune in to ABC on Feb. 9th to witness the latest installment in the Hollywood history books. As mentioned, the awards portion of the evening begins at 8:00 PM ET (5:00 PM PT), but the Live from the Red Carpet program starts at 6:30 PM ET.

  • EMPIRE Reveals Greatest 100 Movies Of The Century

EMPIRE Reveals Greatest 100 Movies Of The Century

Mad Max: Fury Road has been voted the greatest movie of the century by Empire magazine critics and readers in their poll of the 100 Greatest Movies of the Century.

The wild, outrageously inventive action film, starring Tom Hardy and made in the Namibian desert, took the number one spot on Empire’s definitive rundown of the greatest 100 movies made over the past 20 years.

Best-selling movie magazine Empire polled both their critics and readers – who cast their votes by the thousands via empireonline.com – for their favourite films of the century so far.  The list of films has been compiled by combining the choices submitted by critics and readers, to arrive at a definitive rundown of the 100 greatest movies from the year 2000 to present.

The results reflect the exciting and vibrant state of the movie industry over the first two decades of the 21st century.  From blockbusters to indie surprises, the past 20 years have taken cinema to new heights.

On taking the top accolade, Mad Max: Fury Road Director George Miller said: “It’s a lovely pat on the back… How do you measure the worth of a film?  The best I can come up with is to ask, ‘How long does it follow you out of the cinema?’  Some films you’ve forgotten by the time you get to the car park.  Others seem to follow you around for the rest of your life.

On his refusal to give the project up, even though it took almost 20 years to get made, Miller said: “Whenever it fell down, it didn’t stop me thinking about it.  You couldn’t kill it with a stick.”

On Charlize Theron’s performance as the iconic Furiosa, Miller commented:  “There were times when I remember sitting at the back of The War Rig, and Charlies would be driving back to set and I’d think ‘Wow, if this was the apocalypse, I’m glad she’s driving The War Rig.’  She was Furiosa.” How about hazardowe gry online?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films all make it onto the list, with The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring taking second place, while The Lord of the Rings: The Return Of The King landed at 43 and The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers at 53.  Christopher Nolan’s 2008 hit The Dark Knight, featuring Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as The Joker, appears at number three and the more recent controversial Joker appears at number 39.

Much diversity features on the list of films, including Moonlight, a film about a queer black man, which ranked very highly at 5, while God’s Own Country (30), Carol (60) and Brokeback Mountain (54), all also LGBTQ films, made the list.   The highest-scoring film directed by a woman is Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, at number 10 and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, which makes it onto the list at 36.

Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig told Empire what the legacy of Lady Bird had been for her:  “The thing that’s been most moving is really the girls. I live in New York, by NYU and by New School, and there’s a lot of young girls who want to be filmmakers around who come and talk to me. Honestly, it’s the sweetest thing. They’re very sincere and they’re never pushy; they just want to tell me about their moms and their dreams for their life. I’m very honoured that they’ve chosen me as their leader for this time being.”

Mad Max Fury Road was the unanimous favourite film in the critics Top 10, but, in comparison, Empire readers voted The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring their top film and Mad Max Fury Road their second favourite.

Commenting on the results, Terri White, Editor-In-Chief of Empire, said: “It’s been a phenomenal 20 years in cinema and drawing up this list was no easy task for either our critics or readers! The resulting 100, though, is a testament to the verve, vitality and pure power of film in the 20th century.”
