Are You Ready To Crack The Throne? #CrackTheThrone

Who do you want to sit on the Throne in Eggsteros? Are you egg-cited for the season 5 of Game of Thrones starting on 13 April? Well along with Now TV you can watch all 4 seasons on your NOW Box but not only that you can nominate your favourite scene to be played out in egg-static form.  Why all the egg references? It’s Easter after all and what does Easter mean – eggs of course: chocolate, praline, dinosaur eggs. Have you seen the Daenerys egg-scene yet we think it’s pretty eggs-cellent!

What are your favourite iconic scenes from Game of Thrones? Maybe you want to see the eggs awash with ketchup like the red wedding in season 3 or maybe served with sausages after Theon lost that particular part of his body. Or what about eggs on ice when Sam meets the white walkers and survives in season 2! You can choose your most eggs-treme or egg-splosive scene from any of the pervious 4 seasons. Check out Ned Stark’s final eggs-traordinary moment in season 1:

In the lead up to season 5 NOW TV are inviting any member of their online community (that’s you and me) to vote daily on which scene they’d like to see remade and the winning scene will be posted on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram. How egg-cellent is that? Ok enough with the puns but we here at BRWC are excited and we think the red wedding scene should be recreated. What scene do you want to be recreated in eggs-traordinary form? (Last pun)

You can watch Game of Thrones Season 5 from 13th April on Sky Atlantic with a NOW TV Entertainment Month Pass. If you can’t wait until then, Seasons 1-4 can also be egg-joyed until 30 April. Game Of Thrones: Season 3 #GoTNOWTV #MarchMarathon

Red is the colour of love and death and this season 3 of Game of Thrones is awash with red.

Love, Duty and Betrayal are the order of play in season 3 of Game of Thrones. It’s grown just a little lighter but not necessarily brighter in Westeros and the plotting that happened in the darkness of season 2 is now coming to light. What happens when you betray someone close to you as Theon did to Robb Stark in season 2. Karma comes for Theon in a dramatic way in season 3. Maybe he should send a raven to Varys to find out how to manage.

Tywin Lannister played with gleeful malicious magnificence by Charles Dance rules over the Lannister house. The majority of the action of season 3 focuses on the Lannister’s in King’s Landing and now that Stanis Baratheon was defeated at the Battle of Blackwater they must hold onto that power. “Do you think the person who wears the crown holds the real power” he asks Tyrion. It’s certainly not if Tywin is standing behind the crowned one and his withering put down of King Joffrey: “The King is tired” is one of my favourite scenes especially after nobody bothers with Joffrey’s rants of having Tywin locked up.

Young doomed love – Jon Snow and Ygritte couldn’t stay in that cave forever no matter how good his kisses were. Jon must now choose love or duty – in scenes full of pathos and Ygritte doing what any woman in love would do shooting him down in arrows – does he survive or succumb to the hail of arrows – tune in to find out. Betrayal comes to King’s Landing when Shae who feels Tyrion no longer wants her now he is married to Sansa Stark. However, she may be mistaken perhaps Tyrion is trying to protect her from the evil around her but will she understand that.

Then there is love and what better place to celebrate love than at a wedding saying goodbye to an old life and hello to a new one except in true Game of Thrones style. Betrayal comes in many guises and the colour red bleeds profusely all over the wedding but just who survives at the wedding of Lord Walder Frey at which Robb Stark and his mother Catelyn are guests.

Lest we forget that there is still a battle for the Iron Throne and Daenerys wants it but she’ll need an army. As she ponders about buying the army of the Unsullied. It her love for her dragons that reigns supreme in her mind but do they still love her is real the question.

The writers based some of season 3 on A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin and they don’t disappoint in taking the base material and ensuring that the series is as engrossing, witty and heart rendering as per the previous two seasons. As previously discussed the writers have no problem killing major characters even if they are still alive in the books after all the books form the basis of the television show and are viewed as an inspiration source – this is fantasy after all.

Review: In The Absence Of The Sun (Asia House Film Festival)

In The Absence Of The Sun maybe but this sublime, witty and realistic portrayal of life in busy, brilliant and anonymous Jakarta is luminous.

In the bustling, anonymous metropolis where there’s little sun writer, director and editor Lucky Kuswandi gives us a story of one night following the lives of three different women from the different social strata of Indonesian society when they all end up in the same place – the Lone Star hotel. They may be of different ages Gia in her 30s, Indri in her 20s and Mrs Surya in her 40s who just lost her husband but they are all struggling with universal themes of: identity, sense of belonging and looking for sun a metaphor for warmth and attention.

This is a sublime film with laugh out loud moments shining a light on modern life in Indonesia despite it’s advancement in all areas and technology is still quite traditional. The scenes in the restaurant and at Gia’s mother’s house where they are all on their cellphone is both hilarious and tragic.

Lucky Kuswandi manages to capture and translate for western audiences what it means to be Indonesian and yet a foreigner in your own land through the character of Gia. In Indri we see someone who wants to improve her situation the only way she knows how by dating older, richer men no matter how repugnant they may be. However it is in Mrs Surya that the universal truths of betrayal and feelings of a wasted life are richly drawn out not by long monologues but imagery and actions that leave the viewer with enough room to fill in the gaps. The style of film reminded me of Magnolia by Paul Thomas Andersen and if Lucky Kuswandi carries on making films of this calibre we will be seeing a lot more of her.

This is the opening night gala film of the Asia House Film Festival and rightfully so – it captivates – with the fluidity in which it’s shot, the realistic language used and the different subtexts in this comic drama.

  • Review: Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar

Review: Yangon Calling – Punk In Myanmar

Yangon Calling – Punk in Myanmar makes rebellion a worthwhile and thought provoking cause in this award winning documentary about the underground punk movement in Myanmar.

Views on punk music vary but at a time it was known for being anarchic, anti-establishment and hit a high in the early 70s UK and then came disco . Yet this documentary is anything but youthful rebellion – Mynanmar has been ruled by a military dictatorship for the past 50 years and the vast majority have to literally eek out an existence – €30 is the average wage.

The German documentary made by Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke takes an unflinching look at life without submission, a little anarchy and a lot of problems. The documentary was filmed with hidden cameras because the risk of the punks or filmmakers was great with secret police everywhere. The Sex Pistols didn’t risk 5 years hard labour where death is a real possibility. These fearless punks are risking it all and using music as a medium to wake up a whole new generation to the possibility that they can and should demand the right to live in a country that is free.

Yangon Calling – Punk in Myanmar is definitely one to see at the Asia House Film Festival. By the end of it you are left hoping that Scum and the other 99 punks continue to try and elicit change and that their hope remains as loud and brash as their punk music.

The Asia House Film Festival 2015 is running from Friday 27 until Tuesday 31 March in venues across London.

  • Game Of Thrones: Episode 1 Of Season 5 – Sneak Peek & Tease #GoTNOWTV

A year’s a long time to wait but my oh my wasn’t it worth the wait. If you’re suffering from Thrones withdrawal then don’t forget to join the March marathon on Now TV and catch up a season per weekend.

For season 5 as BRWC learnt at the World Premiere on Wednesday 18 March is all about flashbacks, unholy alliances, religious fanaticism, power and dragons. We watched an exclusive viewing of the first episode called “The War To Come”. Are you ready to be teased with a few spoilers thrown in – if not stop reading right now!

“Men of taken have a part to play in the war to come to ensure power doesn’t prey on the powerless” so says Varys trying to convince someone to join with him. Who does the keeper of peace want to sit on the Iron Throne and be the one true king? Is king gender neutral – quite possibly – given that Varys is a eunuch a person’s sexual organs are of little importance! Yet, we also saw two kings and someone who might well be the one true king in the castle in episode one. Then someone lit a fire and just how many kings remained afterwards- you’ll have to watch when season 5 returns on 13 April 2015.

“A dragon queen without dragons is no queen” so says someone close to Daeneyrs. Just where are those dragons and does Daenerys finally manage to control them? She wasn’t doing so well at the end of Season 4 with her dragon children in fiery disobedient form.

Death hung heavy in the air in episode 1 and true to form the writers provided death in two forms and I know which one I’d have preferred. One notable character met their death in a shocking way but just who was it?

In order to know where you’re going sometimes you have to look back. Flashbacks is the watch word of season 5. What do we learn of Cersei and her love of Jaime and will it reach new heights given that their father is now dead, possibly. Although Cersei is a dark horse in more ways than one. Jaime may not have been the original family member she slept with…oh I’ve said too much. Also, spotted on the red carpet at Wednesday night’s world premiere was Mark Addy. He slipped in hardly unnoticed except by BRWC and some other eagle eyed watchers and I wonder just how he shows up in season 5.

New characters were introduced: the mysterious Sparrows religious sect with the High Sparrow played by Jonathan Pryce and the vengeful Sons of the Harpies.

What of the Lannister girls? What of them indeed you’ll have to tune in to find out.

The writers didn’t disappoint and for some episode 1 will feel less exciting that the finale of season 4 and so it should. It would be worse if it peaked too soon. No this was a slow, laconic episode with powerful imagery and comic moments. Plenty of markers were placed in the sand but which ones are to believed and which are just ingenious red herrings – roll on 13 April is all I can say.

As from 13 April 2015 at 9pm my new phrase will be: Thrones on and Phones off.
