Top 12 Movies About Gaming

Some of the best movies of all time have centered around gaming on a fierce PC. There’s little doubt that a bit of fun mixed into thrilling dialogue and action-packed scenes can really create an interesting story. These movies about gaming hit home when it comes to plot, drama, and gaming itself.

American Old West Movies

No one can get enough of the American Old West. It has served as inspiration for TV shows like Deadwood and Westworld; it’s determined the latest fashion trends from season to season; it’s created a setting for games like Dead or Alive and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood; and so much more.



And it’s inspired a number of incredible films. But is a true Western film really complete without a high-stakes poker match? We think not. That’s why Maverick (1994) is next up on our list of the best movies about gaming.

Ocean’s Eleven Movies

Though Ocean’s Eleven, the original, is by far the most well-known, this set of movies have been some of most interesting of casino gaming movies of all time. Ocean’s Eleven was one of the most successful movies released in 2001. It was followed in 2004 by Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007. Later, in 2018, a spin-off of the trilogy was released. It was called Ocean’s 8 and featured an all-female cast. There’s no doubt that, across all movies in this lineup, the star-studded cast really did make them must-see productions.

Drama at Its Best

Most of the movies that have to do with gaming stem from a place of drama. From theft to violence, and even a few love stories thrown in, there is little doubt that these movies will hold a viewer’s attention from start to finish. One of the best examples of this is the movie 21. Released in 2008, starring Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Spacy, and numerous others, 21 depicts a college student that uses math to win big in Vegas, though faces countless difficulties when faced with enforcers looking to stop him from cheating.

Step back a bit in time to 1973 for the movie The Sting. A true legend of the time, this movie featured Robert Redford and Paul Newman, leading actors of the time. Through scheming and fantastic dialogue, these individuals prove what true movie gold is made from.

Spy Movies

Casino Royale is one of the best examples of a spy movie associated with gaming and a movie you should watch once again to understand why it is the best Bond film in the entire history of the franchise. The movie, released in 2006 and in this version, James Bond, a British Secret Service agent, seeks out a man named Le Chiffre who is a known terrorist financer. Bond is tasked with winning a game of poker against Le Chiffre as a way to gain control over the organization. An intense, true Bond classic, this spy movie is perhaps an excellent example of high-stakes games.

Fantastic Storylines

Many of the best gaming movies focus on interesting storylines. You’ll find Rain Main, for example, is a good example of this. Featuring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, this story follows an autistic man and his brother as they experience their biggest winning streaks. The story is filled with messages and a bit of humor along the way.

Another storyline worth exploring is Rounders. The film, released in 1998, is all about the world of poker and high stakes. It stars Matt Damon and John Dahl on an adventure-filled tale of the high life. It is worth seeing just for the various storylines running through it.

Any of these gaming movies are the ideal choice to watch on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. They are also perhaps the best choice to watch before heading out to play a few games on your own. Each one has its own tale to tell, and none are even close to sharing the same type of storyline. That makes watching all of them a must.
