    Scala Beyond

Following the success of 2011’s Scala Forever film season in London, the team behind it are back with Scala Beyond (18th August – 29th September 2012), a six-week season celebrating all forms of cinema exhibition across the UK, from film clubs to film festivals, picture palaces to pop-up venues and even venturing into homes and schools. With a number of partners and major events, the season will shine a spotlight on the people and organisations who keep independent exhibition in the UK alive and thriving.

Operating like a fringe festival, Scala Beyond has announced its Call-To-Arms period with the publication of their own Manifesto for Cinema (see below) and is now seeking event submissions and proposals from any exhibitor, individual or group from across the country. Whilst last year’s Scala Forever celebrated the legacy of the legendary Scala Cinema in London, this year they will be highlighting the passion, determination and enthusiasm of film programmers across the country, and focusing on what makes their screenings special. Anyone can take part, any film can be included – exhibitors just make it an event, come up with a Declaration about themselves and the passion behind your screening and then submit it via the Scala Beyond website to be included.

    The Casserole Club Trailer

The Casserole Club is the winner of 5 Independent Vision Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Kevin Richardson, The Backstreet Boys) and Best Actress (Susan Traylor, Greenberg).

The Casserole Club focuses on a group of 1960’s era suburban housewives. Close-knit and neighborly, they are all bent on one-upping each other, trying to prove that each is “the hostess with the mostess.” They begin a recipe club, and hold dinner parties, testing out their new casseroles. But when the gatherings become increasingly focused on boozy flirtation, and more than recipes start getting swapped, the story moves swiftly from stylized and campy to a drama about irresponsibility, selfishness, and damaged people.

Directed by Steve Balderson (Stuck!, Watch Out), The Casserole Club also stars Daniela Sea (The L Word), Michael Maize (Saving Lincoln), and Jane Wiedlin (The Go Go’s).

9 Worst Cinematic Portrayals Of College Life

    Here’s one…

    Sex Kittens Go To College

You never saw a student body like this!Ah, geez. This 1960 black-and-white uses some type of cardboard robot to select scantily-clad (for 1960) showgirl and secret super-genius Mamie Van Doren to become the head of “Science” at Collins College. Conway Twitty performs in the film, and looks impressively bored while doing it. There’s supposed to be thrills (not to mention chills), but a bevy of sexy stars can’t even save this picture.Authenticity Bonus: Think-o (that’s the robot) was actually the robot Elektro, built by Westinghouse in 1937.
