VICE – TWO FILMS: TWO CULTURES

VICE will be premiering two new films, looking at two very different cultures at Raindance Film Festival 2012 in London.

    Caribbean Fashion Week

VICE’s ground-breaking fashion documentary series, ‘Fashion Week Internationale‘, visits Kingston, Jamaica as presenter, Charlet Duboc discovers Caribbean couture, skin bleaching, dancehall’s impact on global fashion and why girls are swallowing agricultural chicken feed for cosmetic purposes.  Director: William Fairman

    The British Wrestler

Cider. Community Halls. Boots to your balls. VICE looks at the UK’s underground wrestling scene, from the community centres of Plymouth to the streets of Glasgow. A far cry from the now faded memories of terrestrial TV’s World Of Sport and even further from the glitz and glamour of the stateside WWE, Brits across the country have been escaping the banality of their everyday lives by moonlighting as pro-wrestlers in the largely untelevised and often underpopulated wrestling scene of 2012.  Director: Rhys James

  • The Admiral

    The Admiral

Japan, 1941: With war raging in Europe, Japan’s imperial command sees an opportunity to advance their nation’s standing in the world.

The plan to attack Pearl Harbour was drawn up, and one man was tasked with its implementation: Admiral Yamamoto. Opposed to the plan, Yamamoto must nevertheless carry out his orders and commit one of the biggest military mistakes in history.

    Review – [REC] 3 Genesis (2012)

Your wedding day is supposed to be an occasion you won’t forget your happily ever after not the zombie apocalypse!

Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate their wedding day with family and friends and all appears to be running smoothly for the bride and groom as the audience is lulled into a false sense of security in the build up to the worst wedding crashers ever.

It soon becomes apparent that till death do us part may come sooner than the newly weds expected as the guests start to show signs of a strange illness. All hell breaks lose and guests along with the newly weds are running for their lives. We see Koldo at the beginning of the film but we have no idea if Clara is even still alive. We later hear her on a radio/intercom telling Koldo she is also pregnant this almost brings out her maternal instinct straight away the fight or flight response to protect her own. They both set out in the hellish destruction in the hope of finding each other with Koldo bringing a whole new meaning to knight in shinning armour in the most literal sense.

The film mainly focuses on them trying to find each other and start their lives together while all around is pain and suffering. Using a chainsaw that just so happens to be laying around Clara cuts her wedding dress up on one side to make it less constricting she is ready, fighting off the undead and kicking some serious butt with the chainsaw her once pristine dress is now covered in blood, even with makeup smudged and running down her face she is still fearless in her search for Koldo. When given the chance to leave and have a chance to be safe she refuses as she won’t leave without him. Does love really conquer all?

The film is visually appealing with the special effects and bucket loads of blood. Chainsaw check, kitchen utensils check, electric whisk check, sword check, not the weapons that first spring to mind when fighting the undead but they do make make for interesting screen time and they are nothing if not resourceful.

An enjoyable bloodfest and you know what they say you never forget your wedding day!

  • Femen – God Is A Woman

Femen – God Is A Woman

The Ukrainian feminist movement Femen is attracting more attention than ever after their support to the Pussy Riots and the opening of their new centre in Paris. Swiss film director Alain Margot has been following them since 2010 for feature-length documentary Femen – God is a Woman, that will hit the festival circuit in 2013. The film is currently in post-production and is collecting funds through a crowd-funding campaign on WeMakeIt (www.wemakeit.ch). The collected funds will give the opportunity to the protagonists to follow the film in festivals and take part in debates.

Alain Margot, the director, talks about their first meeting in 2010: “I was immediately struck by the incredible strength of these women. After a few months, I realised I had managed to gain their trust and they allowed me to shoot a film about them. I have been following them for nearly two years, the material I have shot so far is really unique, some of the interviews are truly authentic. I was the first to organise a European tour for them, it was very hard to get them visas.”

Interview with movement leader Inna Shevchenko

You have just taken refuge in Paris and you intend to open a new centre there. Do you want Femen to become an organisation that operates in the whole world?

Our movement became an international phenomenon long ago. Even when we were in Ukraine, people knew us and followed us from all around the world. Now, we intend to build a structure for the international feminist movement. This is why we are planning to open five centres for female activists in five different regions, based on their geopolitical specificities. After Ukraine and France, that train activists in the ex-Soviet Union and Europe respectively, we intend to open three more centres to train future “sextremists”: in Latin America, in North America and in the Middle East.

From the start, your movement has attracted a lot of media attention. “Femen – God is a Woman” is the first theatrical film about Femen, what difference do you see between that format and TV or press?

The documentary “Femen – God is a Woman” is a personal attempt from director Alain Margo to understand our activities and to reveal to viewers his view on the members of our movement, their personality et the motivation behind their fight. Television shows the final product of some of our activities, the film will be a way of getting into the Femen’s own kitchen and to show what is happening inside.

Has it been difficult to let Alain Margot, a man, explore your intimacy and give his own point of view on the movement?

No, it hasn’t been difficult, Alain is very professional, we hardly ever noticed him, this is why I believe the film will be completely objective.

The crowd-funding campaign on WeMakeIt will allow you to follow the film in festivals. What type of events shall we expect from you there?

We will take this opportunity to communicate with the press, to meet supporters and fans and, obviously, we will train local women in order for them to take part in Femen’s activities.

GBH (formerly titled RIOT), the new film from the people who brought you “The Rise & Fall of a White Collar Hooligan” is released theatrically in the UK on September 28th and on DVD, iTunes and VOD on October 1st through Revolver. Ain’t It Cool News have already described it as “The British Thriller of the year”.

GBH is a powerful tale of justice and vengeance starring Damien (Nick Nevern) a London copper with a past he’s trying to forget. Before signing up for the force he ran with a football firm, getting involved in tear-ups up and down the country. Now he’s on the other side of the law and faces a tough decision: side with his old crew or protect London as it burns and rioters run amok? Falling in love with fellow cop Louise (Kellie Shirley), Damien is quickly alerted to a street-level uprising that is about to shake London.

Amidst the brutalities presented by the riots, Damien fights for justice at Louise’s expense. Having been raped by a rioter known to him, Damien finds himself levelling with the rioters, fighting a war he cannot win, as much against the rioters as against himself.

The film stars a wealth of british talent including Nick Nevern (White Collar Hooligan), Kellie Shirley (Eastenders), Peter Barrett (Jack Falls), Con O’Neill (Telstar), Lorraine Stanley (London to Brighton) and Steven Berkoff (The Krays). It is the directorial debut of prolific actor and producer Simon Phillips (The Jack trilogy, How to stop being a Loser) and is produced by Jonathan Sothcott (Elfie Hopkins) and Paul Tanter (The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan).
