Being Happy Is Easier Than You Think

We all know such a boy, who has been an unbelievable loser for his entire life. This is what we see in the Way Way Back trailer. So here is Duncan, a king of awkwardness, in all his awkward glory, being as miserable and lonely as a human being might be. Duncan’s mother does not care of her son and his problems at all, being completely distracted by her new lover. Duncan never had any friends to care about him, so now he founds himself to be desperately alone and useless. Mother ‘s dreadful boyfriend, trying to make an image of himself giving a damn, brings his girlfriend and her sons to his beach house. If only he had any idea, how much could change over a single summer…

From the creators of unmatchable Juno and Little Miss Sunshine comes yet another one life-affirming, mild, a little clumsy, but nevertheless charming comedy Way Way Back, which is aimed to restore our faith in humanity. It feels like nothing could be said more about the beauty of the human soul in the guise of an extremely awkward shell and the importance of genuine values than it already has been said, but there are many possible points of view. This time, the point of view belongs to a socially-awkward teenager boy (Liam James), who is constantly bullied by his mom’s douche boyfriend (Steve Carell) and has no basics of social knowledge whatsoever.

One might think that Way Way Back is nothing but another pointless summer comedy with no meaning and deep sense, because The Way Way Back trailer might give such an impression. However, such stories of renewal, even in such a short time and under such comical circumstances, always touch to depth of soul. It is unlikely that a summer at an Aqua park and several new acquaintances can abruptly change human’s life. However, this is precisely what happens in the Way Way Back trailer. And it is portrayed so natural and beautiful, that not to believe it is simply unfeasible. Self-conscious loser Duncan finds himself a true spiritual mentor (Sam Rockwell), who explains to him how important is to keep faith in yourself and how unimportant is the opinions of others. Over time, Duncan becomes stronger and stronger, so he finds a charming girl who, of course, is at first bewildered, but then falls for changing Duncan more and more. Throughout the movie, we trace the emergence of Duncan as a man and as a person. All this comes straightforwardly, smoothly, in the relaxed atmosphere of a summer frivolity. It takes only one dig deeper, and immediately comes the realization that The Way Way Back is not just a tedious comedy, aimed at the budget fees. It is a gentle, witty and very visual guide on how to become a real man, how to be strong and stand behind your words. A story of life, love and summer – on the screens, since the 28th of August.

  • The Conspiracy Clip

    The Conspiracy Clip

The Conspiracy was a massive hit at Frightfest last month, and looks set to strike quite a chord as the Chelsea Manning appeal begins and Scotland Yard’s Princess Diana investigation gets underway.

The conspiracy theories in the film are all based on real life theories and organisations, and it’s an intriguing, if slightly unsettling, watch.

This is the first clip on the web so far, and it sets the scene of the movie perfectly as seemingly crazed conspiracy theorist Terrance talks the young documentary filmmakers studying him through the extent of the new world order.

While they’re initially sceptical, a turn in events leads them to investigate further, and it becomes clear that Terrance’s theories may be more than mere fanaticism.

  • The Rise

    The Rise

We have a new poster and the first clip for The Rise, which features Luke Treadaway, Neil Maskell and Timothy Spall.

Shot on location in Leeds & Yorkshire The Rise is British film at its best, a heist film, an underdog story and a thriller delivered with unexpected originality from the producers of Cherry Tree Lane and Ill Manors. This bold take on a much-loved genre showcases some of Britain’s best new talent (Luke Treadaway, Iwan Rheon) as well as acting gentry Timothy Spall.

Battered, bruised and under arrest, Harvey Miller (Treadaway) sits in a police interview room facing interrogation. Clutching a stack of eyewitness statements, Detective Inspector West (Spall) has no doubt as to Harvey’s part in a foiled robbery, and the subsequent attempted murder of local businessman Steven Roper (Maskell).

    The Rise_Quad

Denying nothing, Harvey agrees to tell his version of events in full. We take in his release from prison a month earlier and the malevolent, unjust act that put him there. We see his emotional reunion with his sibling-like best friends, and the immovable loyalty they have for one another. We see the rekindling of a lost love, a second chance for two people meant for each other. We see the ingenious planning of the ill-fated robbery, the amazing twist, the shocking outcome, and the real driving force behind it – retribution. What unfolds is an exhilarating, moving and often hilarious story of loyalty, jealousy, friendship, revenge and the pursuit of happiness.

Focus: Seven Ways To Have Fun In The Capital This Summer

Although the heat wave has clearly taken its leave now, Londoners will continue to cling to the summer, until it has unequivocally slipped away and they can no longer convince themselves they’re best off in a pair of shorts and a vest top. So although we’re in a cooling period, there’s certainly still many ways to enjoy the final moments of what has been a scorching summer.

If you want to spend the close of the season doing something a little unorthodox, instead of sitting in the same old beer gardens and walking in the same old parks, we have a handful of suggestions.

    iTunes Festival

The iTunes Festival offers 30 days of free music. How does this work? Sign up to iTunes if you don’t already have an account and then take your pick of the variety of artists that are going to be playing in London over the next month including Queens of the Stone Age, Drenge, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Pixies and many, many more. If you don’t win tickets, you’ll still be able to stream the gigs live!

    Catch up with a Film

You could always review the new films on at Cineworld Cinemas. Now that the blockbuster season is coming to an end, some of the more obscure and interesting films of the year are starting to surface.

    Explore Ocean Wildlife

The Horniman Museum has knocked it out of the park again with an exquisite new photography exhibition by Jamie Cragg, which evokes the very same sense of wonder you would feel seeing marine creatures in real life.

    Columbia Road Flower Market

This is a curiously hidden gem on Columbia Road (as the name suggests) in the East End London. If the sun is out, this market is a gorgeous place to be. As well as all the flowers, you can expect street buskers, coffee and cake, samosas and bizarre vintage shops that sell furniture, clothes and jewellery.

    Klezmer in the Park

If you’re interested in sampling some traditional Jewish food and music, head north towards the annual festival of klezmer and Sephardi music in Regent’s Park. There will also be exhibitions of Jewish culture, family activities, kosher food and all kinds of crafts for sale.

    The Alternative London Tour

Having done London’s official bus tour plenty of times, you’re probably looking for a different look at the place this time around. East London’s alternative side is showcased for visitors on this tour, including Brick Lane and areas in Shoreditch with all the street art in between.

    Poster Art 150

The London Transport Museum is hosting a very special exhibition, cataloguing over 150 years’ worth of underground station poster art. It’s an absolute must-see for both visitors and locals alike. You’ll be very surprised at the sheer scale and scope of the art on show.
