Hollywood are constantly producing blockbuster movies with interesting themes and plots related to love, action or humour, but a popular hit among film fans is the connection made on the big screen with casinos.

Here’s a list of five of the greatest ever movies based around casinos:

James Bond: Casino Royale

Five Movies Set In Casinos

Armed with a licence to kill, the movie portrays James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, on his maiden mission as a 00 agent. Bond persues Le Chiffre, a banker to the world’s terrorists, who is participating in a poker game at Montenegro where he must win back his money, in order to stay safe among the terrorist market.

Directed by Martin Campbell, this instalment of the famous Ian Fleming adapted novels was a smash hit, earning $599,045,960 worldwide, while becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2006.

Greed, deception, money, power and murder are the order of the day in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 casino-set thriller. Two mobster best friends and a trophy wife collide over a gambling empire, based at the hottest gambling attraction in the world, Las Vegas.

Seen through the eyes of Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, played by Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci respectively, both are each out to foil eachother, when the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 1970’s and ’80’s are revealed. Events unfold as each develop a tragic flaw, Ace falls in love with a hustler, Ginger, and Nicky falls into an ever-deepening spiral of drugs and violence.

Ocean’s Eleven

Danny Ocean and his eleven trusted accomplices plan to rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously on the same night in Steven Soderbergh’s classy casino thriller.

Ocean, played by George Clooney, wants to score the biggest heist in history by combining an eleven member team to rob the The Bellagio, the Mirage and the MGM Grand, all casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). It’s not going to be easy, as they plan to get in secretly and leave with no more than $150 million. Simple. In the current climate, Ocean’s eleven may face a the task of robbing online casino sites like Coral, avoiding the complex, yet hilarious, set of events that followed in the movie. Online casinos have become a massive success in the past decade, with millions opting to stake their money in the virtual casino rather than the real life one, such as that in the film.

The Hangover

Probably the most hilarious and outragous of the list. Directed by Todd Phillips, three buddies wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas, with no memory of the previous night and the bachelor missing. They make their way around the city in order to find their friend before his wedding, leading to a series of unfortunate disasters.

This incredible and interesting film is actually fact-based, covering the story of six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

Ben Campbell is the lead character, an intelligent student at M.I.T. in Boston, who strives to succeed. Wanting a scholarship to transfer to Harvard School of Medicine, Ben learns that he cannot afford the $300,000 as he comes from a poor, working-class background. But one evening, Ben is introduced by his unorthodox math professor Micky Rosa into a small but secretive club. The group are trained by Rosa of the skill of card counting at blackjack. Intrigued by the desire to make money, Ben joins his new friends on secret trips to Las Vegas where, using their new skills, they have Ben make hundreds of thousands of dollars in winning blackjack at casino after casino.
