These days it seems like Netflix is only used for binge-watching television, so it’s easy to forget that it also is a great source for movies. It’s one of the few places where most of us are comfortable having our habits tracked since it leads to those now-famous, overly-specific genre recommendations like Cerebral Movies With a Strong Female Lead. The more movies you watch on Netflix, the more recommendations you’ll get.
The downside of Netflix is that it isn’t always easy to browse. Its New Releases category has an unusually broad definition of new, and you’ll often find yourself looking at the same movies over and over.
Especially when you watch Netflix Streaming from a Roku or other device, Netflix may not show you every category. It may not even show you the same category from day to day. However, when browsing online, you always can go to the menu for the same categories. Then, all you have to do is add movies to your queue, and you’ll see them show up on your streaming device an instant later.
When searching through Netflix films, it’s all about the genre. Here’s a list of some selections that showcase some of the best Netflix has to offer as well as some more distinctive and unusual picks. Buckle up for these roller coaster rides.
Action & Adventure
- The Champion: Make it a marathon of “Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2.” The fight scenes in these two films are some of the most spectacular on film. Plus, with Tarantino’s flair for dialogue, you’ll enjoy these a lot more than the Asian Kung Fu movies that inspired them. Bonus points for the presence of so many women, a rarity in action movies.
- The Challenger: “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,” Sergio Leone’s classic Western can feel pretty campy to the modern viewer between the familiar soundtrack, the long takes and the gritty faces. But, it’s a classic for a reason. The unusual style deserves a watch even if you’re not into Westerns.
Foreign
- Grand Prix: If you think foreign films can’t do suspense like domestic films can, “Tell No One” should change your mind. Adapted from a book by bestselling thriller author Harlan Coben, this movie of a man on the run is comparable to “The Fugitive” if it were set in France.
- Uncertain Regard: For a trilogy that’s both thoroughly weird and totally mesmerizing, check out Chan-wook Park’s vengeance films from Korea. Start with the first film, “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.” Then, move to the popular movie “Oldboy,” and finish with the last film, “Lady Vengeance.” These twisted films all about revenge are big on style and hard to forget.
Horror
- Straight Scares: For an homage to old-school ’70s scary movies, check out “The House of the Devil.” It has all of the classic horror film tropes. Babysitter? Check. Creepy house? Check. Terrible secrets hiding inside? Check. But, this movie doesn’t go for easy chills. It takes its sweet time getting to its payoff. If you’re patient, it’s worth the wait.
- Creepy Cult Classics: Horror movies that play with genre expectations are practically their own genre now, but that doesn’t mean they’re not fun. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a great example that may have flown under your radar. Two friends head out to the woods only to find themselves cast as villains who accidentally slaughter a bunch of clueless college kids. It is both funny and horrifying, which makes it worth a watch.
