FINDING WALDO: BO KEISTER INTERVIEW

film reviews | movies | features | BRWC FINDING WALDO: BO KEISTER INTERVIEW

Bo Keister has been on a good run lately. With back-to-back films (The Cabining, House of Good and Evil), and the lead role on a hit web series (Hillbilly Horror Show), it’d seem the world’s at the man’s feet. Keister is currently doing the rounds on the internet to rally up support for a new comedy he’s putting together called Finding Waldo, of which we were only too glad to support.

It’s been a good run for you, Bo.  What’s your secret to getting all these good movies of late?

Threats and intimidation!

Nah, I guess a big part of it has been luck. Just being in the right place at the right time, and having the right skills to fill the role. I’ve been very fortunate, and I’m grateful for every opportunity.

You’ve gone into producing. Was that so you could have more say at the table?

In part, but I learned long ago that if you wait on this business to come to you, you may be waiting a long damn time. I’ve never been one to wait around, especially when I can create my own work and, by extension, my own destiny.

It definitely makes booking roles easier when you’re in charge of casting.

Who are you playing in (the next film you’re producing) Finding Waldo?

I am playing “Chance Reed”, an ex pro football star whose life destroyed by his battles with alcoholism and a fateful night of drunk driving.

We pick up his story while he’s out on parole, and working in the mail room of a Lloyd’s of London-like insurance firm. He’s miserable and just can’t seem to pick up the pieces, until one day when he’s called to the president’s office and charged with going to interview eccentric novelist, Waldo Greene.

Waldo is claiming to be insane, and that certainly appears to be so, because he kidnaps me and takes me on the road trip from hell. In the end though, not everything is as it seems.

Do you think that the crowdfunding experience has been ruined at all by all these big companies, big movie stars, and big movies using it? Do you agree that IndieGoGo should be reserved for the true independent movies and that Kickstarter should exist only for those that don’t have the money? (Let’s admit it, Veronica Mars had the money!)

It is a disappointing aspect of it to be sure, and I do wish it focused attention on true “indie” films, like Finding Waldo. Unfortunately, it’s there to be had, so you can’t knock them for utilizing it, even if it wasn’t necessary. Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but it is what it is. Hopefully, for those that donate, they’ll take the time to support the “little guys” instead.

What are your expectations for IndieGoGo?

I don’t know that we really went into it with any expectations. These campaigns can go a number of different ways; all you can do is set a goal and try to meet it. Hopefully, people will respond. If nothing else, we think it will raise awareness and interest in Finding Waldo, and get folks talking about it.

We’ve already raised a large portion of the budget, thanks to our producing partners at Planet Capricorn, and continue to pursue both standard investment and product placement partners as well. I expect that we’ll get where we need to be through a combination of those efforts.

Based on current donations, do you think it’s the film or the incentives that are encouraging people to contribute?

I’d like to think it’s both. We’ve got a great story, with a powerful message of forgiveness and redemption, told through a hilarious adventure that I think will resonate with people.

On the other hand, we’ve got some great perks in place. We have everything from cool film memorabilia to opportunities to be part of the production. There are even packages where you get to join us for the premiere and walk the red carpet with the cast & crew. Who doesn’t dream of that?

Have you got some more announcements coming down the line that will help with the crowdfunding campaign?

Well, we’re really excited about our latest announcement, which is Tom Proctor, from Guardians of the Galaxy, has joined the cast to play “Bruno”, the owner of Crazy 8’s Strip Club. Tom is an amazing actor and we’re thrilled to have him.

There will definitely be more news to come, so I encourage everyone to visit the campaign page to keep up. While you’re there, please consider donating to the film, take a moment to share it with your friends, and drop us a line of support in the “Comments” section. We’re always excited to hear from people.
