Mad Max is the ultimate avenger whose thrill of action and rebellious life makes him a popular and fearless hero.  Max’s ruthless mission to avenge the death of his murdered wife and child encapsulates all viewers. To celebrate the release of Mad Max Collection on Blu-ray we’ve decided to take a look at other great avenging heroes who stop at nothing to get their revenge.

Kill Bill volume 1 & 2: Beatrix Kiddo

The Bride Kiddo wakens from a four-year coma to find the child she was carrying in her womb, gone. Consequently, she must wreak vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her – a team she was once part of. Both films reveal Kiddo as a determined and courageous female heroine.

Ultimate Avenging Moment: In the final fight, Kiddo strikes Bill with the ‘Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique’, holding his hand for the last time before he walks to his fate.

Gladiator: Maximus Decimus Meridius

The Roman general Maximus is a loyal and resilient avenging hero. When the Emperor’s corrupt son betrays him and murders his family he goes to Rome as a gladiator to seek his revenge.

Ultimate Avenging Moment: Maximus revealing his true identity to the Emperor; “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the Armies of the North. General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife – and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.”

Braveheart: William Wallace

When William Wallace’s secret bride is executed for assaulting an English soldier who tried to rape her, the commoner becomes a hero when he begins a revolt and leads Scottish warriors against the cruel English tyrant who rules Scotland with an iron-fist.

Avenging Moment: The duplicitous Scottish noble Mornay, who betrayed William Wallace to the English, wakes quivering and sweating after a scary dream involving a demon-like Wallace emerging from a wall of fire. Believing it to be just a dream, Mornay relaxes for about 2 seconds before Wallace barges in to his bedroom on horseback. The silent and stoic Wallace then mounts Mornay’s bed with the horse, swings his mace, and crushes the unfortunate betrayer’s skull as he lies in his bed.

Taken: Bryan Mills

The retired CIA agent and dedicated dad Bryan Mills travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who was kidnapped while on a trip to Paris.

Avenging Moment: Mills’ warning of revenge to the kidnapper; “I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

The Dark Knight Trilogy: Batman/Bruce Wayne

When Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent launch an assault on the mob, they let the clown out of the box, the Joker, bent on turning Gotham on itself and bringing any heroes down to his level. Batman fearlessly rises to fight and protect Gotham.

Avenging Moment: Batman’s realisation of his possibility for revenge… “People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy, and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood; I can be ignored, I can be destroyed. But as a symbol… as a symbol I can be incorruptible. I can be everlasting.”

Man on Fire: John Creasy

In Mexico City, the former assassin Creasy admirably swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Avenging Moment: Creasy’s revenging threat, “I don’t want your money, I want proof of life – or I’ll take apart your family piece by piece. Do you understand me? Piece by piece.”

Commando: John Matrix

The retired elite Black Ops Commando John Matrix launches a one man war against a group of South American criminals who have kidnapped his daughter to blackmail him into starting a revolution and getting an exiled dictator back into power. Matrix is a thrilling and determined hero.

Avenging Moment:  Matrix executing an entire army without reloading!

Léon: The Professional

The professional assassin Léon rescues young teenager Mathilda (played spectacularly by Natalie Portman) whose parents were killed in a police raid. He heroically stops at nothing to protect her and get his revenge on those who harm her.

Avenging Moment: Léon’s great revenge training of Mathilda shouting “What the f*** is going on up there? I said take the guy out, not the whole fucking building!”
